Based on the comments from the coaching staff, especially the offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, I predict Gus Frerotte will start in the Miami opener against Denver on Sept. 11.

The evidence is in the response Linehan gave on Frerotte's performance yesterday. He was actually making excuses for his, shall I say, below average performance.

Here are the two quotes that I am referring to:

"He wanted to show off his arm, see how far he could throw," Linehan joked. "You know, he missed a couple of things. I think he sped things up a little bit, but he was close on a couple, and that's going to happen in the course of a game.

"I was really happy with the way he managed a couple of plays where he had to throw the ball away. If you get caught up in quarterback ratings and things like that, those certainly don't help, but that's still winning football. And I think other than the throw that was intercepted, he really didn't make a bad decision. To me that's how we're evaluating the quarterback position."

Thread title a little misleading.
not if you've been on finheaven since training camp began. everyone is an expert on the QB position. The thread titles don't mean anything.

Sorry guys. I edited the title to mention this is my prediction.

If I am wrong, I will refrain from making any new predictions for 6 months.

oh I know :)

why start gus?

he has no upside.

aj has upside. might as well start him.

starting gus would be a waste of a season for the fins cause everyone knows that gus isn't the long term solution to the qb problem

might as well give aj a shot.

if he does good, then he will stick.
if he doesn't then we know to get a 1st round qb.

I think its unfortunate but probably true that Gus will be starting week one. When we lose our first three games, perhaps then Linehan will see how truly bad Gus is and swallow his pride. Only then will AJ get a chance to grow and show what type of QB he can be, whether that is good or bad or somewhere in between. If things do go like I foresee, AJ will have to repeat his first quarter performance of last years Bills game and avoid the rest and the five picks.

I don't see anymore upside from AJ than I do Gus maybe a little more from Gus but not much from either

thing you're forgetting is that frerotte has always looked like this. this is what he is. Feeley is young and has not yet had a legitimate shot to prove himself. Last year, i don't care who the QB is, no one will succeed in that sham of an offense. WANSTEDT APPOINTED THE COORDINATOR. THE FIRST GUY QUIT. WE HAD NO O LINE. BECAUSE OF THE **** LINE, ALL OUR RB'S GOT INJURED. not to mention, fiedler was the opening day starter last year...so he didnt even practice with the first team until he got thrown into the fire.....so noone tell me that feeley has gotten his shot. because he hasn't. do i think he'll succeed? only time will tell. and really, we probably won't have a good enough read on him until after 2006 season. gotta have time to learn linehans system.

and Sage is younger than AJ, yet has never gotten a shot either

Wow, really going out on a limb on that one!!

I'm predicting Vernon Carey will start over McDougle at RT.

Look at the date of the original post. It was after the Tampa Game when Feeley performed better than Gus. At that time there were many pulling for A.J. to start.

I was trying to make the point that the starting QB position was already decided by the coaching staff. The Offensive coordinator was making excuses for Gus's bad performance.

I didn't notice that you bumped your own thread.

Still, I don't think you are correct in your prediction. I think you're prediction came true because Feeley played horribly rather than predetermination.

Nick Saban's a smart guy. And he knows that a QB needs time and reps for an offense to get better. If the decision was truly predetermined, he wouldn't have wasted precious time letting both guys split time with the starters in practice. They would have given Frerotte the job immediately.

The preseason has just ended. And we STILL don't have a named starter. That speaks to the argument that Feeley has been given every opportunity to win the job, which is exactly what happened. Frerotte may have been the favorite from the beginning. But Saban is not harming offensive continuity for the sake of PR. The whole "we may play two QBs this season" was an attempt to motivate IMO. Nobody wants to share a starting job. And the hope was that one guy would (finally) grab the bull by the horns and surge ahead. But Feeley got gored by the bull, while Frerotte merely got out of its way.

In short, you can't make me believe that Saban wouldn't have given Feeley the start if he had lit up the Falcons like a Christmas tree. This isn't the Wannstedt era.

My hope is that Sage is named the backup. IMO, the only reason Sage wouldn't be given the #2 gig is if Saban decides he doesn't want to completely destroy A.J.'s confidence.
