Now, I'm a long time lurking reader of the site, but I've decided to post a bit. I've seen lots of propositions and dream scenarios that are great, but lots of scenarios full of wishful thinking and bias (not that bias towards the phins is ever bad :D). I'd like to have a shot at Brees, TO, Hutch, Peterson, etc all and create a Madden team too but it's not likely going to happen. We also put too much trust into our late round picks from last year. Theres no reason to believe other than typical coachspeak and empty praise that Alabi isnt just camp fodder and I havent seen Vickerson dominate teams when it counts either. Obviously they have a rough start with injuries not giving them a chance to show us anything, but we can't just assume that all our picks are starters. It's something I see a lot on this board, refusal to acknowledge any of our picks as being busts. That being said, let me know what you guys think about my realistic (with some bias and dreaming yes) opportunities.

We'll be 10-15M under the cap tops, plus we have to sign rookies, so realistically we can get Brees and maybe another top guy if they come cheap, otherwise, its bargain bin hunting. Our Needs and options:

QB- Brees looks like the frontrunner. We arent getting Cutler and I doubt we'll reach for one in the 1st. Maybe a late round gem that Mueller is prone to finding.

WR- Givens wont come easily especially if we land Brees. Randle El is a dream, dont bother with him or TO. We can't handle large contracts especially with Booker and his 3M hit. I'd look for a possible 3rd-4th rounder and a vet FA (Johnnie Morton/Moulds) to fill in a temporary gap.

OL- There are plenty of solid guys about to get cut I think. Mawae is older but more than serviceable, and the Jets might cut Kendall too. Bentley and Hutch are dream scenarios but it might be difficult to get either while getting the priority of Brees. Mike Williams, LT from the Bills just got cut, though he is a bust to this point I wouldnt mind him under Houck just to try him out. We'll probably go with LT in the 2nd round, McNeill if he sliders, Winston or Justice or Scott will be around depending where they fall.

LB- We'd all like Julian Peterson but thats not going to happen. Same for LaVar. We might draft Greenway but i have a feeling he will be taken earlier if he impresses this week at the combine. McGinest of the Patriots might get cut and it would be a coup to get him cheap. Abdul Hodge in the 2nd-3rd could work.

DB- Ty Law is a dream. Woodson sucks and is also a dream. Plummer is better than Howard (who'll get cut) so I wouldnt cry over getting him, we could do worse, though he wont come cheap. Madison might get traded/cut/restructure so thats tough. I'd look to us getting Cromartie, Yobouty, or another DB (Whitner, Bing later) very early in the draft. Maybe 2 guys early.

Thats just a brief overview really of what I think. There are a ton of guys who can play football out there that dont have the sexy names people are posting about. Lots of guys who have disappointed/down end of careers but who merit a year or two here to fill gaps as we draft our way out of Wanny-Hell. Moulds, Marcus Robinson at WR can fill in easily. Players like Rashaun Woods or Charles Rogers who were busts might find new life here if they get cut. We have a good core that can take us deep with a QB and solid but not necessarily great additions to the team. I'd like to sign 5 Pro Bowlers as well but I think adding a good mix of proven vets with experience, solid but not fantastic players, and young players hoping for a 2nd chance is the answer.

1) Cromartie
2) McNeill\Winston\Justice\Scott
3) Hodge\BPA who falls (ala Crowder, always happens)
4) Some project, like Jacobs or Hester or someone who shows potential.
7) These picks are fodder unless we get lucky, but should be used to address depth at aging positions like DL or thin ones like LB and WR.

moulds wont come cuz mularkey does not like him...

I guess I kind of copped out on a projection for the starting lineup, but thats because the entire purpose of my post is to show how really none of us can project any of it because Saban knows all too well that we can only afford one marquee guy and then have to deal with the cap through FA acquisitions. Here is my guess If I must make one

QB-Brees-FA
RB-Brown-
FB-Whoever, wouldnt rule out a 7th rounder draft pick
WR-Chambers
WR-Booker would probably get cut if he wont restructure, possibly young pickup with promise
TE-McMike
LT-Marcus McNeill in 2nd/Mike WilliamsFA
LG-James (not worth the money but we wouldnt save much by cutting)
C-Mawae/Kendall/Bentley (toss up as to how much they will spend)
RG-Hadnot
RT-Carey

DE-Taylor
DE-Carter
DT-Traylor/Wright split time, i think Traylor is worth keeping as rotation
DT-Holliday
LB-McGinest-FA
LB-Thomas
LB-Crowder
CB-Daniels
CB-Cromartie
CB-Madison could stay, he works well in the slot I believe, so it might be toss up
S-Schulters merits another year
S-Bell looked good, Jones would have to restructure or cut. Whitner would be nice.

i agree that Brees is our first priority and if we get him we shouldnt expect to pick up a big Olineman we will go for on ein the draft

Nice observation about Moulds, I totally forgot we hired Mularkey. Yeah I did say dream alot but really with all the talk about TO, Brees, Edge, and all the other players, lots of people are really dreaming when they project rosters.

I think we get Brees, Bentley and Townsend through free agency and fill the rest of our needs through the draft.

Now that you have that all figured out....can you tell us where bin laden is?!?!?!

I totally agree with your thinking. Brees or a top of the line QB is first order of business and after that we will have to take what we can afford. Someone who I think nobody is talking about that could help the OL is Fabini who just got cut b/c of cap issues. I know he is slightly lighter than what Houck likes at only 304 but he still has a few good years in him and could be had for a reasonable amount. I also think Mawae is a perfect fit here. Also Zack will love not having to contend with him twice a year.
I think then we need a saftey and a OLB and we could really get excited about the up coming year. JMO

McNeill and Justice would have to have terrible combines to slide to our spot in the 2nd. In fact, Justice will probably be gone by #16 overall. Otherwise there's some good thinking in there.

Funny how being a tad more realistic seems like such a downer...but I agree that to some extent. Saban will pull some gems again and we'll look back after FA and the draft (depending on what happens with the CBA) and be surprised what he's added to the team...think about the overall talent he added last offseason with much less cap room to play with...

Dolphins in 2006

In my opinion, the QB talk is much the same as it was last year with the RBs. We were discussing if we get Alexander or Edge and we ended up drafting Ronnie Brown.
If I had to guess I'd say, Saban wants the league to believe we are going for a veteran QB in FA and after all we will draft a QB to groom behind Frerotte.

At least this is what I believe. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind getting Brees but I highly doubt it and Culpepper or McNair are on real options in my opinion.
