I am sure this will change about a million times before the draft is over but here goes 2008 offseason 1.0.
free agency:
QB- B. Volek- not to long ago he was the IT QB going into free agency. Still brings good depth and experiance.
WR- B. Johnson - Big body. Played behind Fitzgerald and Boldin so not spectacular numbers, even when they were hurt, but there is just something about him that fits.
TE- B. Franks - Has really fallen off in his career, but this is not the year of us getting a TE of the future. Should be a descent stop gap until we can get one next year and then they can learn from a former pro bowler.
LT- F. Adams- For a young QB faith in the blind side is an obvious. If you were Beck would you trust an unproven rookie with unproven talent as far as the NFL goes or would you take someone you know has been to the pro bowl as recent as last year. Plus there is the tuna factor. It would be a toss up as far as adding faneca or adams to the OL, but adams will come on the cheaper so it makes sense all around.
NT- Isaac Sopoaga - Was one of the strongest DL in the draft a few years ago and occupies blockers like it is his job, which it is, so perfect fit.
CB - Randall Gay- Is the cheaper of the two Patriot free agent CB's obviously. He'll have familiarity with the 3-4 defense and will act as a serviceable back up/possible starter/ challenger for a drafted rookie for this season until next season when we can make a huge draft splash at this position.
LB - Kawika Mitchell - Big, mean, nasty, intelligent, and intense. just like Bill likes them
then lesser back up roll signings
draft:
1) Chris Long: no need to discuss here, been done enough on these boards
2a)Branden Albert OG Virginia: same size as jake long, but knows T and G and is way more athletic? um steal here
2b)Anthony Collins OT Kansas: we did sign F Adams according to this so this may make some of you scratch your heads, but since he is big and still a project for the NFL I say we move him to RT here. Carey goes to right guard and as soon as he gets it down again becomes one of the elite right guards in the league. Collins footwork is a little sketchy at times so a move to RT should help that deficiency a good amount not having to deal with elite speed rushers as much.
LT)Adams
LG)Albert (whom takes over for adams a few years down the road)
C)Satele
RG)Carey
RT)Collins
instant, youngest and most talented line in the league (adams age is negated by the rest)
3)Jeremy Leman LB Illinois: great leader and a hard hitting intelligent tackler of great size the fits parcells mold. His knock is his speed with a 4.7 40, but with 4 LB to a 3-4 he doesn't have as much ground to cover so it works.
4)Josh Barrett SS Arizona St: he falls to here due to fears of a previous knee injury that should no longer be a problem. Another hard hitting sure tackler with great size that fits Bill well.
6)Adam Kraus OG Michigan: Not an NFL starter at the moment, but started 40 consecutive games at Michigan and knows both G and C. Will provide good depth to a line dismantled by Ireland and CO.
7)Gary Barnidge TE Louisville: 6'6" with a 4.7 40 and almost perfect hands. Knock is he is to skinny at the moment, but can act as a long snapper as well so can contribute on special teams.
