o-line?
secondary?

i think it should be a surprise that we have won 2 outa 3 so far, i say this because our offense has be able to put up points(except jets game) and our defense has been good overall, but horrible in terms of coverage. the reason people were writing us off before the season began is because we have a new offensive and defensive scheme. our offensive line comin into this year was thought to be the worst in the league, and while they've been playing alright, they are still having some growing pains. and when you look at what we have done on defense, you have seen some great rush defense but bad pass coverage. its alot easier to stop the run (when you got big men to plug up the holes) than it is to cover with mediocre corners. the reason im worried about the first 8 weeks or so is that the defensive scheme is so complicated, that there are bound to be mistakes, which translate into big plays for the other team. while our defense has been solid, you have to wonder if we will have more games like the panthers and jets(4th quarter) games. if our offense doesnt keep pace, these are the games we will lose. so hopefully as the season goes on, the corners step up, but it wont be easy. especially when we are constantly rotating defenders. you have to wonder how these new guys comin in are gonna do considering the complicated scheme. although i admit if i was in the same situation i would demote howard too. but i guess in the end our offense is only getting better so maybe we wont have to rely on our defense to win games in this transitional phase.

i guess im nobody because I believed in us enough to go all the way to Florida for week 1 and I'm going back 12/4 against the Bills. :goof:

The OL has been inconsistent this season, although they had their best game overall against the Panthers. What is good is that you can definitely see better play from every player. And this is in spite of the stupid penalties that have slowed and killed drives. With RW returning and the prospect of having both RB and RW in the backfield, it could take more pressure off the OL. Their improve play is a major difference between last year and this.

The secondary is a horse of another color. It has gotten worse as the three games have been played. The Jests exposed us and Delhomme nearly exploited them to a win. The funny thing is that in the offseason, I was less concerned about the secondary, given that is Saban's expertise. The real issue to our secondary play is pressure on the QB...The DL has to step up and play like it did against Denver in order for the secondary to be more effective. We are stopping the run, but still not getting consistent pressure on the QB. The other thing about the secondary is that it is not every player that his playing poorly. Both safeties have done ok or at least gotten better. The slot CB (Howard this week and Daniels last week) have been the toasted ones. Howard actually played poorly at CB and 3rd CB. That has to be corrected.

I have to add to your list of ares that need improvement to the QB play as well. Gus has been adequate and been able to score some, but has missed several opportunities. His accuracy is very poor and needs to improve in order for our WRs and TEs to have a better chance to show their athleticism. (YACs) He is not hitting them where they can continue on in the play...they have to stop, slow down, turn to the opposite shoulder, or he simply over or underthrows them...Again, he's doing some things right...game management, vet. leadership, audibles, etc but his accuracy is slowing down the improvement in the offense...

I dont want the media to rave about us, I dont want to be power ranked high. I couldnt care less about what the so-called experts think.

All that matters is what the players and coaches think. I do want the stats to have our respective units ranked high against the others in the league, but I am more than happy to have every media outlet, and every other team overlook us, not respect us, not prepare for us.

Let them all undervalue us, and claim we arent as good as our record...fine by me, I hope they dont prepare properly and think we are soft.

Dont want them on our bandwagon one bit.

it's weird, i dunno why the media doesn't think 4-12 teams will win the next year

I think all of you make great points on this topic, but I see our lack of getting to the QB consistantly when we run Blitz packages. Those blitzes are designed to take pressure of the secondary by forcing quick throws from an opposing QB. More often than not the blitz comes up the middle by Zach who is almost always tripped up by an opposing RB. I think we need to leave Zach at home and bring it from the outside.

I agree. I love Zach but blitzing is just not his forte'. :shakeno: Leave him at home and bring the pressure from other places. The more pressure we put on the QB the better our secondary will look. I am glad Saban is looking at some new blood during the bye week. I think we will see improvement in the next couple of weeks.

History has not been kind to those teams.

Since the 49er's have fallen..have you seen them back up the next year.
Cincy's History
Arizona's History
Giant's History
Bills History
on and on..

Once these team drop from grace, they've been struggling to some extend ever since...So no, most would expect a couple of years to rebuild. SD is one of the only teams recently to come from that far. Others are usually 6-10, 7-9, close games, and then the next year turn it on. The only problem I had with the media was that they didn't look at Miami in the right light..basically most of our team were injuried last year, yes we rebuilt the OL, but the team was pretty much the same. So I've argued that Nick was inheriting a pretty good team. Now are they playoff caliber, only time will tell.

I feel that the oline will only get better as the year progresses.

As for the secondary, yes, they are struggling right now. But everyone must remember that we have an AVERAGE secondary. Not bad and not good....it's middle of the road. The big thing that we must all remember is that for the last 7 years we've had one of, if not the best secondary in the league...cedtainly at the CB position. We just have to remember that what we see now is what 31 other teams are accustomed to seeing every year. It's just that it's unique to us not to be the absolute best in pass defense. I know that I myself, forget sometimes how lucky we've been in the past. our DBs ARE good enough to get the job done..they just aren't shut down guys anymore. And it's an area i feel that Saban will look at drafting next year...in addition to LB and Oline.

Back to the original post though....I feel the reason some don't believe in us is simply because we were 4-12 last year, we have a new HC, OC, DC, and many many others and every level of the team (O, D, and ST) are ALL learning new systems and thought processes. This is not something that teams normally get right in their 1st season. I feel however that we are a bit ahead of where most, including myself, thought we would be.

I feel our biggest problem is quality depth at ALL postions other than RB. I also think tI know this is Saban's feeling and I'm pretty sure that's what a lot of commentators or so called "experts" realize as well. A couple of major injuries and we're in pretty big trouble. Worse than most teams I feel. However, if we can keep our starters realitively health for the entire season, were going to be happy with the final outcome...not the SB (although that would rock!) but still very happy. Personally, I think we'll end up with a few injuries that DO cause us to lose a couple games...damn I hope not but they always seem to happen. When all is said and done...I still see us as a 8-8 to 9-6 team....I'll be ok with that.

On the injury note.....I have a question for everyone.......who do you think would be the biggest problem for the team if he got hurt and had to miss significant time?

I'm throwing Sam Madison out there.....while he hasn't played yet up to his old standards, losing by far our best CB from a unit that is terribly thin as it is and lacking in overall talent.

You're thoughts on the player who would hurt the most if he went out for a significant time?

Our offense has Gus Frerrote at QB. I can see why the media doesnt believe in us.

Oline inconsistant? hardly. Only 2 sacks so far. Have they been stellar? No, but they are coming along just fine.

I think many don't believe in us because of all the issues we had over the past couple years coming from the Wanny regime....we would win 9 or 10 games but we always would fizzle out by December and were not a legit playoff threat. Once we start winning consistently and knocking off the better teams we will move up the power rankings...I am very happy with the progress the Fin's have made so far and I think we have a decent shot to make the playoffs and can go much farther than anyone thinks we can......being the underdog can be to our advantage. Saban has brought new-found respect for our Phins.

Three words...."Strength of schedule"! Miami has the toughest schedule of all 32 teams. For a team that just came off a 4-12 season, not many "media people" are gonna believe in this team. As I stated before, no one knows this team better than its "true fans" and the team itself, let the outsiders believe what they want to believe!

The shift key is on the far left of the keyboard. Above the Ctrl key.

Oh by the way, I agree.
