I've watched so many of these QB threads and finally can't resist the urge anymore to give an opinion. I am not a scout, have no inside sources, just a fan and this is entirely my speculation. (Be warned: this is VERY LONG) So here goes:
Leinart - Goes 1 or 2 overall. Give up any idea the Dolphins are a player for him. Saban won't pay the extreme price it would take to move up. I'm not convinced he's the next Tom Brady, but he's the closest to being ready to be a starter in the NFL. Worst case, he's probably an average NFL starter. Here's what Leinart says about his arm and mobility on USC's web site, "I'm not the most physically gifted kid. I'm not going to scare anybody with my arm or with my running ability. But I feel like my mind sets me apart. And my accuracy." I don't like the fact he's a lefty. Means you have to design your offensive tendencies to account for that. And a good RT becomes a must.
Young (likely comes out) - Top 10, assuming he plays well in the Rose Bowl and the all-important personal workout QB prospects get. Miami is not going to give up what it would take to move up. His pure athleticism will cause somebody to take him early. I think he'll be a couple of years before being ready to start, but has a lot of upside. Also has the potential to disappoint.
Quinn - Won't come out. No matter how well he finishes the year, he won't be the 1st QB taken. Another year under Weis like this year, he will be the 1st QB taken in 07. I don't see the new CBA persuading him to come out.
Cutler - The wildcard. Could go anywhere from top 10 to end of the 1st. Most likely in the top 10, assuming a good senior bowl week. Too many teams are looking for QBs this year for him to fall very far. Disadvantage with him is that the program he plays in isn't a winning one. Makes it a little harder to see how he'd play when he's consistently expected to win, as opposed to "moral victory".
Here are the teams drafting ahead of Miami, and the ones I guess will be looking for a QB early in the draft. Not all the teams looking for a QB are going to end up with one. There just aren't enough.
1. Houston (2-12) Frantically trying to trade down if they end up here. I think Leinart ends up being taken here, just not by Houston.
2. San Francisco (2-12) D'Brick. I heard it here first. :)
3. New York Jets (3-11) QB, or this pick goes to SD for Rivers
4. New Orleans (3-11) QB - Todd Bouman?!? These guys are going QB.
5. Green Bay (3-11)
*6. Arizona (4-10) If Denny survives, this pick is going to be used to garner a QB. If there is any chance Daunte is moving, this is going to be the new address. Much more likely, Arizona drafts one.
*6. Buffalo (4-10)
*8. Tennessee (4-10) Often mentioned as a possible QB suitor. I see LT as a more pressing need with Volek getting a year or two to prove he can handle the job.
*8. Detroit (4-10) QB - If Orlovsky can't start a single game with
the Lions' ineptitude on offense this year, I don't think anyone sees him as the answer.
10. Oakland (4-10) QB if Young falls this far. See the above on Det and substitute Walter for Orlovsky.
11. St. Louis (5-9)
12. Cleveland (5-9)
13. Baltimore (5-9) QB. One good game by Boller doesn't change this.
14. Philadelphia (6-8)
15. Miami (7-7) Looking for a QB, but Saban/Muller will take the best player available. I'd say less than a 10% chance that a QB is the BPA here.
16. Minnesota (8-6)
I count between 5 and 7 teams looking for a QB somewhere fairly high (top 3 rounds) this year. Probably only 3 will merit going in the top 15, unless Quinn decides to come out. With 6 teams chasing 3 QBs, I think teams in the top 10 wanting to move down are going to be very happy.
IMO.:)
