I've watched so many of these QB threads and finally can't resist the urge anymore to give an opinion. I am not a scout, have no inside sources, just a fan and this is entirely my speculation. ;) (Be warned: this is VERY LONG) So here goes:

Leinart - Goes 1 or 2 overall. Give up any idea the Dolphins are a player for him. Saban won't pay the extreme price it would take to move up. I'm not convinced he's the next Tom Brady, but he's the closest to being ready to be a starter in the NFL. Worst case, he's probably an average NFL starter. Here's what Leinart says about his arm and mobility on USC's web site, "I'm not the most physically gifted kid. I'm not going to scare anybody with my arm or with my running ability. But I feel like my mind sets me apart. And my accuracy." I don't like the fact he's a lefty. Means you have to design your offensive tendencies to account for that. And a good RT becomes a must.

Young (likely comes out) - Top 10, assuming he plays well in the Rose Bowl and the all-important personal workout QB prospects get. Miami is not going to give up what it would take to move up. His pure athleticism will cause somebody to take him early. I think he'll be a couple of years before being ready to start, but has a lot of upside. Also has the potential to disappoint.

Quinn - Won't come out. No matter how well he finishes the year, he won't be the 1st QB taken. Another year under Weis like this year, he will be the 1st QB taken in 07. I don't see the new CBA persuading him to come out.

Cutler - The wildcard. Could go anywhere from top 10 to end of the 1st. Most likely in the top 10, assuming a good senior bowl week. Too many teams are looking for QBs this year for him to fall very far. Disadvantage with him is that the program he plays in isn't a winning one. Makes it a little harder to see how he'd play when he's consistently expected to win, as opposed to "moral victory".

Here are the teams drafting ahead of Miami, and the ones I guess will be looking for a QB early in the draft. Not all the teams looking for a QB are going to end up with one. There just aren't enough.

1. Houston (2-12) Frantically trying to trade down if they end up here. I think Leinart ends up being taken here, just not by Houston.
2. San Francisco (2-12) D'Brick. I heard it here first. :)
3. New York Jets (3-11) QB, or this pick goes to SD for Rivers
4. New Orleans (3-11) QB - Todd Bouman?!? These guys are going QB.
5. Green Bay (3-11)
*6. Arizona (4-10) If Denny survives, this pick is going to be used to garner a QB. If there is any chance Daunte is moving, this is going to be the new address. Much more likely, Arizona drafts one.
*6. Buffalo (4-10)
*8. Tennessee (4-10) Often mentioned as a possible QB suitor. I see LT as a more pressing need with Volek getting a year or two to prove he can handle the job.
*8. Detroit (4-10) QB - If Orlovsky can't start a single game with
the Lions' ineptitude on offense this year, I don't think anyone sees him as the answer.
10. Oakland (4-10) QB if Young falls this far. See the above on Det and substitute Walter for Orlovsky.
11. St. Louis (5-9)
12. Cleveland (5-9)
13. Baltimore (5-9) QB. One good game by Boller doesn't change this.
14. Philadelphia (6-8)
15. Miami (7-7) Looking for a QB, but Saban/Muller will take the best player available. I'd say less than a 10% chance that a QB is the BPA here.
16. Minnesota (8-6)

I count between 5 and 7 teams looking for a QB somewhere fairly high (top 3 rounds) this year. Probably only 3 will merit going in the top 15, unless Quinn decides to come out. With 6 teams chasing 3 QBs, I think teams in the top 10 wanting to move down are going to be very happy.

IMO.:)

Good post, nice analogy. I would really hope we get a QB in the first round, but it doesnt look like we will. I think Cutler would be a good option for us at first round, but maybe Saban wants another FA QB.

Im super biased on Cutler. Ive been to all his home college games & love the guy. I hope we get him. He's perfect for Saban to groom and mature into a stud of QB. Im tired of hyped up super players that go bust. Regardless, Its always a crapshoot.

1. San Francisco (2-12) Reggie Bush
2. Houston (2-12) Ferguson
3. New York Jets (3-11) Wont take a QB, too much already invested in position.
4. New Orleans (3-11) Too hard to tell what is going on here
5. Green Bay (3-11)
*6. Arizona (4-10) This could be the team that gets Rivers
*6. Buffalo (4-10)
*8. Tennessee (4-10) Matt Lienart
*8. Detroit (4-10) QB - No QB here. Millen is going to cover his butt and keep Harrington.
10. Oakland (4-10) AL Davis doesnt like young QBs. Andrew Walter has impressed somewhat.
11. St. Louis (5-9)
12. Cleveland (5-9)
13. Baltimore (5-9) They will bring in a vet to compete with Boller.
14. Philadelphia (6-8)
15. Miami (7-7) 2nd best QB after Leinart.
16. Minnesota (8-6)

i still don't get why jay cutler is out of nowhere the next greatest thing to come along.... you know, not all mid first round qb's work... in fact, a lot of them don't.

This is what I keep saying and I'm starting to think I should make it its own post. Alot of people seem to thiink the Jets are going to take a QB. They have alot of money tied into Pennington (about $15 mil I believe) no matter what they do with him. A player picked in the 3rd spot will command close to what Ronnie Brown got this year ($30 mil). Thats alot of money to be tied up in one position for a team with as many needs as the Jets have. So I just don't see how its possible that they draft a QB.

Not all Qb's work out period, regardless of draft position. And since we hopefully will never have a top draft pick ever again, we're going to have to take a risk on one past the top 10 of the draft.

I'm no capologist, but Pennington will be 30 before next season starts, a suspect arm to begin with, and has a serious shoulder injury he's trying to come back from. Is that the kind of guy you'd want to be your QB?

Not saying your wrong, but I would think the Jets would be motivated to find some creative ways under the cap to fix their QB position.

You know ....Ben Rothlisberger was i think 11th overall he was the 3rd QB to be taken, yeah....i think hes pretty good too. Dan Marino was a Mid rounder QB in the 83 draft- possibly the greatest. Cutler has done really good aginst some good teams exspecially when he didnt it all basically all by himself. Leinart had 2 of the best backs to help him out and some great young WR. Cutler didnt have much and he still had a great year. He's tough and has a stronger arm than Leinart does ( in my opinon).

Millen won't get to make the call in Detroit. He'll be long gone...But if Harrington lights it up the next two games, who knows?

Millen will be there for at least this offseason and the 2006 season. He just got a 5 year extension the same day Mariucci was fired.

you're bringing marino into this? fine, how about leaf, or that blonde left from usc, or kyle boller, or patrick pamsey, jp losman, akili smith, tim couch, mccown....

All these people on here making mocks and having teams pass on Cutler are just pretty much HOPING that they pass on him but we might have to get our QB in free agency, trade or on the later rounds cos he's probably gonna be gone before us.
