My take on mock drafts

So far in the year 2007 I've seen mock drafts that have the dolphins drafting the likes of ted ginn jr., brady quinn, amobi okoye, levi brown, laron landry, reggie nelson, gaines adams, leon hall, and dwayne jarrett. The one thing they all seem to have in common in the eye of the public with the exception of quinn is that they all seem to be "reaches" at the #9 spot. Whatever the Fins choose to do with their first pick, the team needs a player than can step right in and play right away. The defense probably wont be near the top of the league after another 2 or 3 seasons if an overhaul isnt made to the personel either this offseason, or at the lastest, next offseason. The window is closing fast for the dolphins to make a run with this current roster, but some glaring needs must be filled first. In no particular order, the OL, the secondary and OLB must get more talent and more depth. Patrick willis from ole miss would be the only OLB worth drafting at our spot but even that would be a "reach" by most peoples standards and the easiest way to immediatly improve the OL would be to open the check book in free agency and get the likes of Steinbach or Dielman and maybe leonard davis from arizona if the price tag isnt too high on him. Which leaves the secondary, a group that made a combined 5 interceptions the entire season. I forget what year it was but i remember when at one point, Madison, Surtain, Knight, and I think brock marion all had 5 ints! Obviously that would be a lot to ask for but we need some playmakers in the secondary. Personally i think we should go with a S and take either Landry or Nelson both of which are ball hawks who could lay the lumber in the SEC, by far the most athletic conference in college football. I know everyones going to say that we shouldnt take another safety in the first round but Jason Allen hasnt proved much to this point in terms of being a game changing safety. In the playoffs this year the colts defensive turnaround was made entirely because of the return of S Bob sanders. Between either Landry, Nelson, or even Leon Hall someone needs to be drafted that is going to come in and be a hard hitter thats going to be all over the field

Uhh, I was thinking Pat Willis also, but have been informed over and over that Willis at OLB is pretty much equivelent to Zack at OLB...could never happen.

Aside from that, a good thread, and I agree that somebody at 9 should be able to play right out of the shoot.

will wasn't Cadillac Williams a player who could, and did, step in and play right away? And Ronnie Brown was a guy that would take 2-3 years to start paying off?

Gruden acknowledged that before the 04 draft.

this is the same debate we've had 1000s of times before, just different names. Obviously, 90% of us are happy to have Brown over Cadillac at this point, it's starting to pay off. I don't know why you wouldn't approach all the draft picks in exactly the same way.

neither have nelson or landry yet. having said that i thought drafting a S was a terrible idea until someone pointed out that j.allen may be able to make the move to corner. i also agree that we NEED to get a starter at that pick.

I agree that a S wouldn't be a wash if Allen could move successfully. I would rather draft Russell, Quinn, Thomas or Brown though.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you are looking for a "quick fix." This teams needs to be rebuilt as I don't think we will be competing for the AFC crown (or AFC East title, for that matter) for at least 3-4 years. So I disagree when you say we need someone who can step in and play immediately.

For instance, if we thought Alan Branch would be better than Okoye as a rookie but Okoye would be better 3 years from now, I think we should draft Okoye (just an example).

3-4 years?!?!?! C'mon u must be kidding me. We've got to be a contender NOW. We have a defense and we need to draft a playmaker on offense. No one is going to wait that long for this team to find its remedy.

Oh you will wait that long. There is no other choice. This team is a complete mess and it will take years to make up the ground that the Pats and Jets have on us currently. Because if we can't outplay them consistently (and we can't right now), then we have zero chance of going to the playoffs.

Dude, you're an idiot. How have the Jets (who were 4-12 in '05) and the Pats (who are on there way down) gained so much ground over us. If you think we have zero chance of reaching the playoffs in the next couple of years then Id have to bet there is zero chance that your an actual Fin fan.

We draft the best player on our board at a position of need and then just go out and play. We will almost certainly not be competeing for a SB this year. We need to build this team into a longterm contender, not keep pretending we are bonafide SB contenders and patching in quick fixes. And if we score a playoff spot along the way, great. If not, as long as we are making good and noticeable progress we are still happy.

That means 3-4 years to replace them. And hopefully our offense will be going as well by then. We cant get caught up in the ZT/JT thing. They are bigtime players, but they are not the be all and end all. We cant rush to an illadvised failed SB run in an effort to "get them a ring" nor should we say we will suck in 4 years because they will be gone.

Other teams contend with stars retiring/leaving all the time, we can do it too. Thats why I talk about longterm viability.
