Well, looks like we'll be getting the game in early. With that said, here's my take on the upcoming game.
Unlike many casual fans in the NFL, I think the Dolphins are a legitimate team that can play with anybody, as long as they do two things. 1) run the football well, and 2) control the clock.
I think it's imperative that the Dolphins do both of these things if they want to win the game. While the Chiefs appear to be strong against the run this season, those stats are a bit misleading. In the first two games of the year (against the Jets and the Raiders) ... both teams fell behind early and were forced to pass the rest of the game.
As for the game against the Eagles, they just never decided to run. They threw the ball up & down the field against us.
With that said, I think our defense, if we choose to, can be decently balanced in both defending the run AND the pass. The problem is, we're so committed to trying to stop the run, that we're really struggling with pass defense, as often times we bring Sammy Knight up close to the line of scrimmage, leaving Dexter McCleon (a major liability) in man-to-man, which is just brutal.
Now, the Chiefs DO have CB Eric Warfield returning, and most of us Chiefs fans believe that he will make a HUGE difference. It will allow Gunther Cunningham to play more man-to-man press coverage with Surtain and Warfield (both excellent man-to-man defenders) and that, in turn, will give him the opportunity to let his LB's (Derrick Johnson & Kendrell Bell) to roam free.
As for the Chiefs offensively against the Dolphins ... well, what can I say. I think that we could struggle again. It's no secret that our offense has yet to establish any type of rhythm since the second series of the 1st game of the year against the Jets. We're trying to find ways to BEST utilize Larry Johnson and Priest Holmes, and we're still struggling to get the Ball into Tony Gonzalez's hands. I look for the Chiefs to target Tony early & often and try to get him involved in the game.
Overall, I think your defense will neutralize our offense for the most part, despite the possibility of not having Jason Taylor and Junior Seau. I'm a huge Zach Thomas fan, and I never enjoy lining up against him.
Do I think you guys will hold us to under 21 points? No. Do I think you guys will win? Quite honestly, I don't think so.
I think both teams REALLY want this win badly, and for the same reason. Neither team is far behind in the playoff hunt.
But I will say, that I have to give the Friday edge to the Dolphins. The Chiefs have been distracted all week by the potential of the Hurricane, and from everything I've heard, Nick Saban has kept his team FOCUSED. Not to mention the fact that many Dolphins players are used to this by now.
Overall, I look forward to a great game. I'm not one to predict a final score, because I think it's pointless, but in my unbiased opinion, I believe the Chiefs will win by about 10 points or so.
I usually have a pretty good feel for the Chiefs, as I have picked all of their games correctly on the year. In fact, their loss AT denver on Monday Night was my best bet of the year, sadly.
Good luck guys and stay safe. Should be a good night to play some football!
