the one thing that all these negotiations point to for me is that we want Jake Long, but not for any of the reasons that ppl are saying. IMO the secret lies in the fact that the other person we are talking to is gholston. this is very diffent than chris long being our number 2 guy. if we pass on chris he will be taken number 2, but if we pass on gholston i can see him at 6 or 7 jets/pats and thats a fall. i feel that billy p's offer is a lot lower than any number hopeful is expecting,(but a lot higher than what they are expecting as nubmer 2 ect) but jake also knows that if he doesnt take it gholston who would like to avoid a slide would jump all over it. if we can sell the gholston interest enough then jake will b hard pressed to pass up the deal, especialy because if both longs are there at 2 i see st louis taking chris. i would love jake, i think he is the first step (pleez everyone take note the first step, meaning if we draft him we wont be and should be expected to be a great winning team all of a sudden) to being in a place we would like to be, contending for a playoff spot in the nearer future.

I just read your entire post and have no idea what ideas you were trying to convey.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but if you could crystalize your "theory" into 3 or 4 short sentences it might help.

i think that we want jake and the only reason that gholston is there instead of c long is becasue gholston will take what jake doesnt. chris long like jake would be more inclined to ask for top dollar. so we are using gholston as a differnt type of leverage.

Or maybe we use J.L to drop the price of Gholston then say to C.L this is what the other OLB/DE said he'll take Would you take the same deal to be #1 or do we go back to the other 2. There is far less money at # 2 then 1.

maybe they're playing on the whole Michigan-Ohio State rivalry! lol. I don't know how much you could sway Chris Long if he knows the Rams are going to take him. the difference between #1 and #2 isn't that much(relatively speaking), especially if they are trying to low-ball him.

Or Gholston is the target, and Long is a pawn in the game.

Any of these are possible, some may have a higher probability than others, but we'll find out.

Then we go to Mcfadden with the same theory. After that we talk to Ryan etc... Eventually we will be able to sign the #1 overall for less then it will take to fill my tank of gas.

In all seriousness though, I don't believe that is a scenario. Only because if the Phins really wanted Chris then if Vernon or Jake accept the contract that plan is out the window.

Now in a way to be open minded here, I will go this far. If this was just another smokescreen, I wouldn't say it's to get a player as much as it is to get extra draft picks. If it is true that the Phins have the top 4 guys rated very close together then this is a scenario.

I notice Gholston and Jake are the 1 and 2 as possible contracts are concerned. They just happen to be the guys that St Louis and Atlanta are very much in love with. By offering a contract it could force St Louis to trade up. Then domino effect Atlanta as well since we were gonna talk contract with him.

But in no way do I feel it's to get Chris Long to agree to a lesser contract. It's more wishful thinking then a reality, cause as I said, if either Jake Long or Gholston agree to the contract then Chris Long is no longer in the picture and the whole theory just went down the toilets.

But what if J. Long calls our bluff and agrees to a below-market deal?

i say it is a two man race..jake long and my boy gholston...lets hope we go with gholston...

Personally I love Gholston, especially as a pass rushing OLB in the new 3-4 the Phins will be playing but he is a big time risk as far as bang/bust is concerned. Either Long seems like the "safer" pick, and I think I prefer Jake over Chris right now. The other thing to look at too, is if we get Gholston at 1, theres not too many elite LT- or even RT for that matter - in this draft, meaning our second rounders would be used on other needs. But if Jake Long is taken at pick one, there is PLENTY of quality LB depth in this draft for us to fill that hole with one of the two second rounders. Just a thought......

Exactly! If we sign Gholston and draft him we actually get a top player for less than #1 money. Lowers the ceiling and changes the face of the whole draft.

It kind of Puts Jake Long in a pickle huh folks?

At least that is what we are trying to make everyone believe.

I'm likeing Gholston more as the draft nears, I think the dolphins pick him and trade back in the frist with the 32nd and our 3rd round pick to get an Ot.
