Everyone here knows by now that we traded Brandon Marshall for two third round picks, one in 2012 one in 2013. A lot of people are upset because he was our number one receiver and it goes from being a weak position to an even weaker position. Brandon Marshall is a physical specimen, 6 foot 4 230 lb receivers that run like him do not grow on trees. I for one was very happy two years ago when we traded for him, I thought that he was a great receiver who needed a change after a lot of bad occurences in Denver. I thought that coming home for him would allow him to mature and become an even better player. Fast forward two years and there is no denying that he did not mature.

Losing him is a blow to an already weak offense. However, it was a necessary evil. This is not an uncommon thing for teams to do, the Patriots traded Randy Moss when he was beginning to become a problem. The Steelers traded Santonio Holmes because they saw that he was not a player they wanted to build around going forward. The Bengals traded Chad Ochocinco because he was more of a head ache than they could stand. And these are just some of the examples.

Our new head coach comes from the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are built on three cornerstones family, religion, and team (Vince Lombardi). Teams like this do not stand for people that put the individual above the team. Unfortunately Brandon Marshall never developed into the kind of person that puts the team above himself. I like Joe Philbin, I think that he stands for these values.

I believe that the Dolphins quickly realized that despite their best efforts they were not going to sign Peyton Manning. Since they would not be able to sign Peyton Manning they would not be Super Bowl contenders. Their would be no reunion in Miami of Manning, Wayne, Clark etc. Plan A failed. We all know it, aside from Peyton Manning there were no free agents that would propell us into Super Bowl contenders.

Plan B- Go Young.
It appears now that we will either sign Matt Flynn or draft Ryan Tannehill. I am rooting for the latter. Either way a new young quarterback will be coming into Miami and be given the keys to the franchise. Joe Philbin coached Flynn for years in Green Bay and Mike Sherman coached Tannehill at Texas A&M. I am confident that they know a thing or two about those quarterbacks and whomever they decide will be a solid starter. So ask yourselves with a young new quarterback do you really want Brandon Marshall? The guy that we have seen have a major offseason disaster every year. The guy who throws his quarterback under the bus to the media? The guy who talks to the media about how much he wanted to play with Jay Cutler again? The guy that yells at quarterbacks and coaches on the sideline because he isn't getting the ball enough? I don't. I want to surround our quarterback with young talented weapons via the draft and smart free agent signings.

For the past couple of years we have made expensive free agent signings and we have learned that they rarely work. There is a reason these teams are letting these players go. Their is a reason that the Oakland Raiders, and Washington Redskins don't make the playoffs, building through free agency is never the right decision to make. Hopefully Joe Philbin installs the Packer way of thinking into our organization that you need young men with character and the drive to win above all else, not men seeking a big pay day.

its possible marshall was informed that they were going after flynn and he wanted no part of another work in progress and said he wanted to be traded. miami decides to avoid the problem and public in house feuding and embarassments , decides to quickly move marshall for low value.

I agree completely. If there's one thing that the Pakers embody it is the team concept. Brandon Marshall is NOT a team player. Never was never can be. I'm not saying that there is a MASTER plan, but everyone said they wanted Philbin to put his stamp on the team and maybe this is it? Who knows? I don't, I doubt anyone that posts on a Miami Dolphins message board does, and the media damn sure doesn't.

I don't post here and for good reason, the board is filled with a bunch of whiners. It seems to be the only thing that is in abundance on this board as common sense is certainly lacking. Obviously this doesn't apply to all but the vast majority. One thing I do on these boards is read, I've read a lot of posts. Remember during the season when 90% of the board was complaining about Marshall?? I believe I even recall a few threads asking for a trade. Now the sky is falling because he is gone.

All that is well and good, but HOW MANY TIMES do we have to clean house and do this until be get a decent team?!

I totally agree with your post and thoughts in principle, but there are two HUGE problems with that line of thinking:

1. Joe Philbin definitely does not have complete autonomy on personnel decisions, so the idea that he will make this into a similar organization to the Packers is a stretch. Actually, i'm not sure he has ANY say in personnel...

2. We still have the same dumb a** front office we have had for the past several years where we hoped that a new, young influx of talent via the draft would help us. Look where we are now though? How many draft picks of this regime are even mentionable?

Great thoughts, bro...i'm trying to stay positive and think that they see the same things we do...i truly believe in Philbin, i just think our front office is a clown show, and we are rapidly becoming the laughing stock of the league. Soon, we won't be able to sign ANY worthwhile FA's.

We have a new head coach, house cleaning is inevitable. The new head coach will have to look at every single player on the Dolphins roster and decide is he part of the solution or part of the problem. Brandon Marshall was deemed to be part of the problem.

Good post but I think you are giving the front office too much credit. I don't think Manning has made up his mind at all, let alone tell the Dolphins that they are definitely out of the deal. He hasn't even visited with all of the teams interested in him yet (Tennessee tomorrow). If he did tell the front office that he wasn't coming, it would make a little sense, a little. Marshall was a headcase, but trading him away for virtually nothing has opened up a horrendous hole on this team which we cannot afford. Furthermore, getting only two 3rd rounders in return with one of them being next year is just plain unacceptable for his talent.

Randy Moss was had for a 5th rounder and in another trade a third rounder. Chad Ochocinco was had for a 6th. Santonio Holmes was had for a 5th.
Could a better deal been had probably. But with head case receivers you never receivers equal value.

Not to mention this completely rapes any faith away from fans, and the players, that the team wants to win, and win now. This team really isn't that far away. All we need is a QB and we can play with the best of them. We have a good D, good line, good RB, and we used to have a good corps of WR. We were close. But, now, as you pointed it out, it looks like we are starting the rebuilding process AGAIN. And we will have to wait another 2-3 years, again. I hope the front office enjoys the empty seats next season, unless we pull off a miracle with Manning.

Its day one of FA. It hasnt even been 24 hours yet.

Get off the ledge! You dont want to throw your nuts away for Brandon Marshall. Its not worth it.

Robinson scored 11 TD's in one year. Marshall 9 in two. The name of the game is score more points.

Agreed, but it's all for naught without a significant upgrade at QB.

When Moss was traded for a 4th, in his prime, the Pats went on to go 16-0 and went to the Super Bowl. How did the Raiders do? They sunk to the dregs of the league. But at least they had an excuse because Moss was stinking it up there. That was still one of the worst trades in league history, in my opinion. That situation is exactly comparable here. Don't be surprised if we are terrible next year.

I don't expect the playoffs next year (well I never do). I hope to witness something being built next year from the ground up. A winning philosophy and team play. 53 players that play their hearts out every week for the city of Miami and the Dolphins organization. That doesn't happen overnight, all I am saying is I don't think that Brandon Marshall was part of that solution.

I agree with the original poster. Marshall is an excellent receiver, but did not play like the monster we brought him in to be. We needed a guy who was going to make the IMPORTANT TD grabs all the time and get us the YAC and he was inconsistent about this. His petulance certainly contributed to the slow development of Henne, who is drawing significant interest in the FA market. I gotta believe it is Flynn or Tannehill, and THAT is the biggest bummer about the whole situation. We enter another season with uncertainty at the only position that really matters.

But it is only uncertainty. The fans on this board, today, have proven that the beatdowns that we have taken for practically our entire lifetimes as fans have hardened us. NO ONE knows the future of either of these two QB possibilities here. MOST OF US would predict that Brandon Marshall would not be a bigger asset than liability in their development. So he is gone and we will likely take a swing at his replacement with that pick or . . . Flynn + Blackmon +Winston.
