I finally got a chance to fire up the DVR and watch the Jags game. I came away very impressed with the Fin's progress despite it being a pre-season game. Here are a couple of nuggets for thought that I haven't seen mentioned...much. I don't get a chance to read every thread so if I am being redundant, I apologize.

1. Pennington is THE leader we have been looking for at QB. I wasn't too excited about this signing but the Trio obviously knows way more than I do. He looked better after 1 week of practice than anything we have had in a while. His confidence and brains more than make up for his lack of arm strength.

2. Our O and D lines are far more improved than I would have imagined.

3. I am not one to whine but the referees hate the Fins. The left tackle from the Jags had obvious holds on at least 3 plays that were not called. Ginn absolutely, with no question, caught that bomb from Henne. Finally, the roughing the passer call on Crowder should have a requirement from the league that the OB wear a skirt for the rest of the game - pansy call!

4. Speaking of Henne, I was even more impressed that he "completed" that bomb to Ginn on an audible than I was in the play itself. This is where he is head and shoulders above Beck and McCown. The game appears to have already started to "slow-down" for him. Beck has the physical talent but apparently has no pocket presence nor ability to read defenses. About 80-90% of being a great QB is between their ears, not in their arm...see Joe Montana, Chad Pennington, etc. Henne identified the 8 man front and called the proper play then put the ball on the money. He truly looks, at this point, like he is the future of the Miami Dolphins.

5. Ricky is still one of the most physically gifted running backs to ever grace a football field. If the trio can keep his head straight, big if here, we are going to be brutal in our running game. I hate it for the poor opposing linebackers and especially the DBs late in the game. Wait a minute, no I don't...crush their butts! Nothing better than cleat marks on some cornerbacks jersey and face mask!

I also came away impressed from Penningtons opener. But I'm not trying to get excited to quick til i see a consistency of good play out of him. It seems that Ginn will be the most benefitial from the prescence of Chad. Ricky has been the most impressive and it looks to be that he will start week 1.

Pennington knows how to get on the same page as his receivers and it is already showing. If things continue to progrss as they are, Pennington will be as key to the development of Ginn and Henne as the coaches are. Also, he said after the game that he feels it is his obligation to be a roll model and mentor to the younger players, not just the quarterbacks (the absolute opposite of what Farve said regarding Aaron Rogers - I hope Lankford and Merling knock him woosy week 1). He is essentially a coach in a uniform, ala Peyton Manning. He doesn't have the cannon for an arm so being in complete unison with his receivers is key. He really looks like the man the job. I hope he starts for us this year and maybe next then takes over a Don Strock roll and transitions into a coach for us. I think he has the brains and demeanor to be the next Jason Garrett.

It's hard for me not to get too excited for this year after seeing the improvements the staff has made on both sides of the ball. I really feel that people are under estimating our team; this isn't the same team or coaching staff as last year so I wish people would stop comparing us to last years team.

I totally agree with you but I hope that we are grossly overlooked 16 times this year by the teams that we play. When we stomp their butts into the ground, they will recognize how much better we really are. However, that will realistically only work for a couple of weeks. If we win 2 or 3 of our first few games, we will get plenty of positive press and teams will be game-planning the heck out of us. Our greatest asset right now is no one really knows what to expect out of us other than our established coaches previous tendencies.

Good observations, and I will add this...

I live near the Jacksonville area, in St. Augustine, and I can tell you that Jaguar fans were FLAT OUT embarrassed... and THAT is saying something, especially regarding their offensive line.

You have to understand that the Jaguars mauled people on the ground last year. And as good as their running backs are, it was the line that created the wholes and moved the pile in '07. Jaguar fans take pride in how "bad ***" their o-line is. And our new defensive line certainly took them to task.

I wouldn't call the performance last Saturday night a total domination, but it is certainly being talked about here as either A) a cause for serious concern that maybe the Jag's o-line is slipping and perhaps not as good as they used to be or B) maybe... just maybe... these Miami Dolphins of 2008 are NOT the same football players everybody laughed at in 2007.

On the other side of the ball... it just can't be said enough... this offensive line for the Dolphins - barring injury - has the potential to be spectacular. Seriously. Forget about "being good" or playing "above average" or "above expectations". Forget that. This o-line has the makings of giving Ricky Williams the kind of second chance that John Riggins had with the Redskins back in the early 80's... look Riggins up in Wikepedia - it's an interesting read, his story. And I think that Ricky (and then - when his knee is further along - Ronnie, too) is going to just destroy teams this year. I really do. And all the more because of the acquisition of Chad Pennington. Not because anyone is going to respect his arm... come on... but because he sells the play action pass so well... and because - and it simply can't be said enough - he's A) so damn smart, and B) a true competitor.

I saw Pennington play in his last collegiate game, in person. And I can tell you that the Herd was down by some crazy number of points - 28 or 31 or something - in the second half. And this guy was just unbelievable. He'd be grabbing receivers by the facemask and pointing at his eyes, telling them to look at him... he'd be at the line of scrimmage barking out audibles and I could hear it from the stands... unbelievable. Pennington... say what you will about him... he is a true competitor, of the Marino caliber... except, and please forgive me, but it IS true... a whole hell of a lot smarter. Had Pennington been blessed with Marino's physical talent and abilities, we'd be talking about him the way people talk today about Peyton Manning... all around great guy, smart, talented, with all the tools, and smart. Marino had most of that, but he was/is not the sharpest tool in the shed - sorry, again, but it's true. Not to mention he's always had a pension for being a primadonna, and that's just annoying as hell. Humility and a sense of humour (especially the ability to laugh at yourself) go a long way to making someone a great leader, ala Peyton Manning (and no, I'm not on his jock - I could list other example, too).

Bottom Line:

People here in Jacksonville were not impressed last weekend - they were BLOWN AWAY, embarrassed and left scratching their heads. Both their lines were either handled or abused for most of every play... and Jag fans are NOT used to that.

So take it for what it's worth. Yes, it was just a preseason game... but I think, and so do a lot of other people... that the Miami Dolphins... are finally on their way back!

GO 'PHINS!

PS - Here's a link regarding the comeback (23 points) I talked about. It's a good read. Shows you that Chad's not a quitter.

I remember telling my friend that the Jags would be a great test. Their lines are some of the best and they have the rep for being the most physical team in the NFL.

That said I was shocked on how we handled them. I kept asking if the first string teams were still in.

The next game will determine if it was a fluke or if we really improved that much.

-81- It seems like the Jags have embarassed us once or twice in the past so I can't say that I feel too bad for them. However, it is nice to finally get some respect and have some real reason for optimism. I agree with everything that you say about Pennington and truly underestimated his "presence" with the Jets. I guess that the team around him really did suck that bad.

I also agree that the Dolphins have the makings of a great offensive line that should stay intact for several years to come. They look good now but could become fierce as they gel even more throughout the year. I don't think teams will look forward to playing us the second half of the season as even if they pull out a win, they will know for damned sure they have been in a fight! We have a lot to look forward to and I do not think an even or possibly winning record is out of the question at this point.

I agree. We honestly should stomp the Chiefs but I am concerned that the young players may lose focus because of the win at Jacksonville and get ****y. It will be a test of Sparano's ability to keep everyone's eyes on the bras ring. I think they will be up to the task.

Don't be shocked, Atlanta did the same thing to Jacksonville. Even though I liked what I saw, I too will wait and see what happens and KC isn't going to convince me Miami is better, I will be very disappointed if we take a step backwards against KC. It has niothing to do with KC, it would have to do with the fact that Maimi needs to get better and stay that way, not be up and down.

Absolutely right. And it's a good thing for the younger players. But I'm totally confident that the Sparano and Co. will keep everyone on track. This team's shaping up, more and more, like a group of smart, mean mother fo's... and I totally DIG THAT! Win or lose, I want teams to know they were in a fight with a foe that came ready to match BOTH wits and brawn... THAT is the 1-2 punch!

I have noticed that Sparano is merciless about mental errors and will chew up anyone who screws up. However, unlike Saban, he is even more relentless in praising his players and instilling confidence and a winning attitude. Man, I love this front office. Parcells may even be better at coaching coaches than he was at coaching players, he has even said that he enjoys it more. Sparano certainly looks to be the real deal. Bad A$$es with Brains - you gotta' love that!:hi5:

ginn was not a catch he bobbled it and then only got one foot yea i wanted him to catch it looked good before the replay

That was a tough catch, and I think that with a little more experience he would have had enough concentration to drag the second foot (ala OJ McDuffie) and keep it inbounds. But Ginn is definitely showing us that he's a player. He's making the graps, sticking his neck out in traffic and showing improvement all the time. He will prove worthy of being a high #1 pick.

What's scary (or should be, to the other teams in our division) is how many players we have like Ginn that are only going to be getting better this year and coming into their own... probably all around the same time.

Mark my words, there's going to be a signature game at some point this year where it will all come together and some announcer will be saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, the Miami Dolphins are back!"

thast the diff btw henne and hte rest, he has balls and he uses em. that bomb he dropped evne hto he saw the 8 man front our previous QB's still woudlnt have thrown that ball but henne did cuz he has confidence and balls. end of story hes hte man.
