This is not a post about what I know will happen just my approach as none of us can predict what another team is going to do with any degree of certainty. I will break this down position by position and give my early draft looks. Way too early to say for sure who we should take.

Qb- No need to make any changes here. If we can get a 4th rounder or more for Beck I would definately make that trade. Im sure Parcells would too but Beck has value knowing the system and we are not in a salary cap crunch. I dont see any team offering above a 6th for him so lets groom him to be our backup if pennington gets hurt. Qb's need development so why not take some time on him, its not like its likely we have to use him this year.

Rb- For the most part I think we should stand pat at running back unless a guy fairly late in the draft has fallen a ways. A late round gem might have value if we cannot come to an amicable agreement with Ronnie Brown the free agent year. You never know how negotiations can go and both sides may have differant views of his value. I suspect no decision will be secure until the end of next season unless Brown starts off like 2007.

FB- Polite looks like our best fullback since Konrad but he has bounced around the league for a reason so competition is a good thing. There is one very possible upgrade although I doubt Seattle lets him walk. Leonard Weaver would be a very nice signing at FB. Polite definately needs competition and I would not be opposed to drafting a FB on day 2. I also hope we work with Hilliard in the offseason to develop him as a FB.

TE-This position seemed a fairly strong one last year and the most consitent TD producer of our offense. 11 tds were scored at TE compared to like 4 from the Wr's. Kind of a disturbing statistic to a degree but we are a team in transition. The performance of Fasano and martin were pretty damn good for the most part although Fasano did seem to dissappear ina few games this year. I like Fasano as an all around type guy. i think we need to make up our mind on fasano and see if we can resign him now. Both he and Martin are free agents and we may be smart to draft a young TE late in the draft to develop or maybe Haynos is that guy although not a big Haynos fan. So definately keep eye on TE talent falling later in draft.

Wr- Although I do think overall the talent of our wr group is mediocre, must say thier results were pretty damn good. Ginn, Camirillo and Bess all proved themselved worthy of being NFL receivers and excelled at times.
London is still a major project and will possibly have to fight for a roster spot. Nate Washington would be a good free agent to look at on the cheap , is saddled behind two top wr's and has made some nice catches. Is still only 25 so would be a small investment. I think if we can get a good player in trade at a good bargain like Torry Holt it would be worth looking into. Anquan Boldin is good but Im sure they want a second round pick plus you have to give him that huge raise. Definately draft a physical wide receiver fairly early in draft.

OL- I personally think we criticize our oline way too much. There were key injuries last year and we had alot of new pieces in place. Basically 4 players in new positions. I think more than anything we need to let theses players gell. Carey if he does not break the bank should be resigned. The wild thing is the way we seem to be looking at replacing Satale which would be a dissapointment since he at first seemed to be a suprisingly good draft pick. Im all for keeping Satale, Long, Thomas,Smiley and carey as our starting oline. Thats is the two injured players are healthy and good enough. This would be the first time in a long time we returned the same line two years in a row. Although only technically since Thomas went down game 1. I still believe Lines get better the more they play together. As reserves I would keep Alleman, Murphy and our other host of noname young olinemen to compete with draft picks. i see no reason at all unless you want to replace Satale of going out and spending big money on a lineman. I guess we could look at a player like Ray Willis in free agency.I would also like to see more of Johnson the former starting C.

DL- This is where I think some decisions will definately be made. I think Holiday will be gone and I would go ahead and make that move as soon as possible if thats so. We have Starks, merling and Langford that makes a damn fine rotation. Devlop Wright or Dotson into that rotation. Holiday is a soldi player but seriously we have players ready to step up. he was still damn good last year and very underrated so if we keep him Im sure we wont be dissapointed. Dt is another story. Ferguson was a good Aquisition but he is far from an ideal NT for this team. Ferguson is also not cheap and thats why Dallas sought to trade him. 4 million is his salary for 2009. Would be best to pair him with our future NT. Solai was thought to be that guy but I truly dont see it. i definately think we need to draft a NT day one. Colin cole might be a worthy free agent target but I would definately prefer to draft a guy. We also have raw Joe Cohen that we can work on.

LB-actually a pretty solid LB corp that worked pretty well together and used a good balance of player strength and weakness all year. Definately need to look to future because most likely most of our starting LB corp will be gone in another year. Keepers Roth, Porter, Crowder and newcomer Wake. Akin was good at times but there needs to be a decision made between him and Torbor. Seems like Akin would be kept over Torbor since he took the job from him last year. So based on his contract Torbor should go. I still would like to work with Quinton Moses, he did make a few plays last year in very limited play. Charlie Anderson was also somewhat dissapointing since Roth took his job from him but is relatively cheap.
I definately see us drafting an OLB fairly early and maybe an inside guy later on. Would love to see Walden develop but Wake may mean an end to him. Also give my props out to Kersaw who has been with 7 teams in 2 years that is impressive lol. This is the one spot I would not mind spending money on a Terrel Suggs or possible a Dansby for the opposite spot to Porter but I predict these guys will want the farm.

Db- The most glaring weakness is youth in our secondary, no young talent in development. Not one starter under 30 and 3 starters at free agent. there are two corners I would actually make a run at in free agency. Bryant McFadden and Dunta Robinson to be one of my starters opposite Will Allen. Goodman played well at times but was also burnt like a candle quite a bit also. if goodman want to come back low budget fine but his history does not merit a big contract. Bell played great at safety but he also has a checkerd injury history so proceed with caution on extension.
there are some solid options in free agency to place beside Bell. Sanders, Landry and Jim Leonard. i see us looking for at least one free agent S and hopefully a CB. I do think Culver may be able to lock down one of our safety spots while we draft a guy. We are all still waiting for Allen to at least crack the lineup, much less be the next troy P. babers and billingsly at least have some raw tools that maybe we can develop. Joey Thomas needs to go away. Michael Lehan may also be back but big deal.

Special teams- No big needs as far as skill positions but Im all for bringing in competition to Carpenter and Fields. They are very good at some things and not so good at others. Fields can be quite iffy directional and carpenter is not strong on kickoffs. We definately could use a Kaseem Osgood on special teams and need to look at upgrading our return men unless somehow Ginn might do some of that.

My draft would go something like this now. I would prefer to trade our first round pick for a second rounder and more but we shall see.

1-Louis Delmas S or Brian Cushing LB
2-Hakeem Nicks Wr
2-Ron Brace DT
3-Asher Allen CB
4- OLB
5-OL
6-CB
7-S

I like your mock draft dlockz if that happens it will be a good draft class!!!!!!!

I think Nicks is the kind of receiver that will really help this team and mesh well with the pieces we have

I really think LB was pretty average last season. Porter was the only one coming up with big plays. Yeah the rest of them played solid, but in this 3-4 defense Miami runs, LBs have to make plays, INTs, FFs, and sacks. Crowder is expendable if he wants anything more than $5 Million a year.

Roth was playing his first season as a 3-4 OLB and Miami could be looking for a starter to replace him. Although I expect Roth to provide depth on a thin LB core. Akin played solid as well having a couple of picks and was a solid tackler. I actually think he played just as well as Crowder.

Our Defense was really exposed in the running game this year. Some teams were able to run the ball on us and most of that fault lies with the LB core.

Our offense was one of the main reasons our D had a soild year. They were able to usually keep the D off the field and rested up. Look for the trifecta to upgrade our LB core this offseason.

Here's how I see our needs (in order of importance):

1) Guard - Smiley is coming off a broken leg. Donald Thomas spent last season on IR and has started only one game, so I am not sold on him. We need serious help at the Guard position.

2) Center - I really can't bear to watch Satele block anymore. He just flops around like a fish out of water. One of these days, a Miami QB is gonna get their head torn off because Satele can't block.

3) Defensive Tackle - Ferguson is decent, but unspectacular, and getting up there in age.

4) Inside Linebacker - Crowder looks like he is gone. We need to fill that hole.

5) Wide Receiver - We need one big, tall, physical, red zone receiver and our WR corps should be decent.

6) Outside Linebacker - Porter is getting old, and he needs help on the other side.

7) Safety - I guess Hill is ok, but can be easily upgraded.

8) Cornerback - I think Goodman and Will Allen played great last season, but we need a Nickel DB. In the second New England game, when the Patriots lined up 4 and 5 WRs, and we couldn't stop them (or even slow them down), I almost started crying like a little baby after someone stole my lollipop.

I completely agree on Torry Holt. If you remember correctly, Randy Moss was "washed up" two years ago when NE traded a fourth rounder for him. Anyone remember what happened?

Hey Valandui, who is your Avatar? She is smokin hot. She looks kinda like a young Famke Janssen - is that who that is?

Hey Guys let me aks you this question would you all object if Miami could bring back Surtain and Zach for one year and then trade for boldin and then draft 2 dt's 1 cb, 2 linebackers and a center like David Washington and a de like Ugo Chinasa who is a big de who also can play linebacker and special teams ?
in other words let Patrick and Zach help teach the new kids how to cover people.

ok bad idea , but i just had a thought even though it was a temperary situation.

what about drafting ot Michael Oher , and David washington for our oline and then draft DE/OLB Ugo chinasa and draft Shannon Woods and let him play wr or move Ronnie to fb and use Ronnie and cobbs in a 2 back set.

you guys may not like this but Branon Pettigrew is a big blocing te who can catch so why not take him and use him as a right tackle / hybrid te who makes play s everytime he touches the ball . with Fasano and Martin they are both nearly 31 years old so this could be a safety net for us.
there really are several options for miami .

Fasano isn't even 25 yet (I don't think he is) and Martin has alot of life in his body due to him being a backup and his injury history . . plus he is only 29. We are very strong at TE right now. Isn't Pettigrew a first round TE? Some have him going to #11 at Buffalo.

I wouldn't mind Oher due to his versatility. He would be a great compliement to Jake Long . . . if we didn't resign Vernon Carey . . . and even if we did, I could see us still going OT if the value was right.

Forget about Zach and Surtain . . . both are old and washed up. Zach doesn't even come close to fitting a 3-4 defense, he can come back as a LB coach, I wouldn't mind that at all. I know Dolfans don't want to hear this, but he would be a liablity to our defense. We are looking to get young and upgrade, not get old and downgrade. We have to move past Surtain, he best days are behind him, rather get younger being we already have a old secondary as is.

the key to stopping the run in the 3 -4 is the NT and Ferguson is average at best. Actually I disagree that our defense was so bad against the run.
The defense was 10th versus the run in the NFL giving up only about a 100 yards a game. The defensive liability against the run is greatly exaggerated. We gave up only 11 rushing touchdowns. Our pass defense was ranked Our pass defense however was ranked 25th in the NFL guiving up 227 yards a game and 18 touchdowns. We lost more games this year based on pass defense than our run defense. Arizona, New England and Houston all passed for like 400 yards on our defense.Hell the game that Crowder missed was probably our worst game linebackingwise with a runningback having a 100 yards rushing and another runningback having 100 receiving. Our run defense did not cost us a playoff game since the offense turned it over 5 times. Simple math you turn the ball over 5 times to 1 and you lose. The linebacking corp was far from a major problem this year and in fact as a whole they were a big reason we went 11-5 and that includes Crowder.
In fact look at our two bigget games of the year and you cannot say the linebackers let us down. Look how well we played the run versus the jets and controlled thier backs and Te's out of the backfield. Linebackers are not a major problem at all. Our offensive line and defensive backs are much more of a problem.

I never said the LB corp was a problem, I just said I don't think they were great. Just look at the Steelers D, we run a LB driven defense just like them, but they have the better LBs. We have much room for upgrade at LB and just you watch Parcells and Co going to go after LBs in the draft and free agency. Hell even Cameron Wake is a sign of things to come.

I actually think Ferguson played above average in the run game. He commanded two blockers consistently on run plays and was rarely pushed off the line. He was a very good NT IMO. I would say his pass rushing skills were lacking, but you don't ask your NT to be a pass rusher.

Our LBs were out of position quite a bit. We all know Porter's weakness is run defense and Crowder isn't great either. Roth was decent in the run game, but not great. Akin was probably the best tackler on the team this past season. Our offense often scored first in many games and we almost always won the possesion battle and that is the main reasons teams decided to pass on us rather than run on us. Also our secondary had their heads up their butts for awhile before they decided to show up and that is why teams like the Cardinals, Pats, and Texans threw on us.

My whole main point is that there is room for A LOT of improvement in our LB core. Just you watch Parcells and Co. go after LBs this offseason. We need better tackles on that unit and more pass rushers.
