I am not going to speculate any names out there because frankly I don't know who we will go after besides Groh/Crennel.

My only hope is that we get a DC with a pedigree in Blitz Packages. I am talking a Rex Ryan/Dick Lebeau (spelling) type of DC that likes to blitz and blitz from all angles. That is what this team needs is an agressive attitude instead of the laid back rush 3 or 4 approach that hangs our secondary out to dry. So many times this year I was frustrated to my wits end that we were getting absolutely no pressure on the QB. Paul Solia if you watch him lines up a yard off the ball and doesn't even attempt to push the pocket. And how many times do we allow a QB to scramble straight up the middle for a huge play that devastates our chances in a game.

This is my wish and I am sticking to it. I hope whoever we bring in likes to bring the heat. Just think of how good Vontae Davis/Sean Smith would be if we actually pressured the QB consistently.

You know why guys like Rex Ryan and Dick Lebeau look like such geniuses? Yeah, they've got cute schemes, but they've also got top flight talent out there. It's easy to look like a genius when you have a guy like Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed, or Darrelle Revis. Try looking competent when the anchor of your secondary is a glorified LB Yeremiah Bell or when your best pass rusher is a 3-4 DE. The fact of the matter is that until we get better players out there, any coach we bring in will look mediocre.

This could have some truth, Dick Lebeau's defense looked pretty bad without Polamalu this season, and it seems even without Rex Ryan the Ravens defense didnt skip much of a beat.

This guy hit the nail on the head folks. Coordinators get fired largely in part because they have no playmakers on the field.

The NFL is about making plays. You can X and O all day long, but at the end of the day players must make plays. The Fins D right now has ZERO consistent playmakers.

Coaches coach, players play. This team needs an influx of 2-3 consistent guys who can make key plays.

Steelers were 12th best D in PPG without probably the most dynamic defensive player in NFL Troy P and they lost Aaron Smith. Considering they have a pass happy offense I would not say they looked pretty bad! I think Lebau should be Hall of Famer just as a DC, a lock when you look at his whole career.

i agree that Lebeau should be in the HOF, but you cant say their defense, especially pass defense took a major step back this season, without polamalu.

There is a degree of truth in what you are saying but we do have some talent. Joey Porter if used in other ways rather than one on one against a tackle can be dominating. Why does James Harrison look so good? Because of the way the Steelers blitz. If you make the Tackle go down to block another LB or Safety it puts Harrison one on one against a TE or RB. He wins that battle 75% of the time or better. That is what "cute schemes" get you, mismatches to exploit. Why did the Steelers D drop off? Who was the S that was blitzing all the time? Troy Polamalu. He knew where he was supposed to be. A Backup or Fill in is not as well versed with where he is supposed to be. Did the Ravens fall off this year? No but they guy who took over was their LB's coach for a number of years and he kept the same scheme. He knew them from the last how many years of experience behind Rex Ryan. Ed Reed (Playmaker) was hurt for a number of games this year and they didn't fall off much without him. Why? Because he is not involved in the blitz packages. He is the center fielder of the Defense. Other Players like the LB's and Landry are called on to blitz more in those Defenses. Usually LB's are all up on the line of scrimmage to try and disguse the blitz and then 1 or 2 will drop into coverage and 1 or 2 will blitz but you never know who is coming when. That is a "cute scheme" and it is very effective. Did Rex Ryan turn the Jets into a team that constantly got pressure on the QB this year? Yes he did. They were a totally different team this year. Last year they stuggled getting constant pressure on the QB, this year not so much. Yes Revis is probably the best Cover CB in the NFL but you do have Lowery and others that have to defend too! "Cute Schemes" can help the other players look better. Example, QB's are taught to throw to the side the blitz is coming from right? If you bring the blitz from Revis' side do you really want to throw his way? Absolutely not!

Again, you are stating some truth that there has to be talent but here is how I can claim that it isn't the only thing.

The New York Giants did not lose any talent this year other than Pierce getting hurt, but Blackburn played well in his absence. They did have a few injuries in the secondary but they added guys like a Chris Canty to an already potent D-Line. Spags left and their defense fell apart. Same playmakers, Tuck, Uminyora, Kiwanuka, etc., not the same results at all. So you can't tell me that the blitz packages of Spags didn't have a large part to do with the drop off!

Butler from Pittsburgh could be a guy that fits the role of the kind of coach I was speaking of by the way!

Thanks! GO PHINS!
