I love this site, but everytime a new fa or "trade possibility" is mentioned in the media(ie. Boldin, suggs, scott, chad johnson, TO) there is always a thread about "lets pick this guy up". I love the idea of great talent coming to miami, however, i cannot name 1 team that has been competitive within the last 10 years that has not done it through the draft.

The cardinals gm said it best regarding boldin when he said "it isn't a smart move to get rid of great players" So if they are availible, theres a reason for it.

Football is not baseball, you can't drop 200 mil and expect to get a championship team, and one player doesn't take you where you want to go. (unless where you want to go is into cap trouble). take the jets, raiders, sea, minn. signing free agents is not the way to go, draft smart, and have cap room to hold on to the people you have.

Remember the dolphins a few years back, brought in every free agent we could, damn near all probowlers, but at the end of the day, probowlers that don't play well together only make an average team. weareas average players that complement each other are championship teams (see patriots if needing proof) I say forget suggs, scott, boldin,TO, Johnson,TJ...Give me a thirdround draft pic with the heart of Cammarillo over them anyday..and it will be cheap too.

I guess, after i get off my high horse, can anyone name a team that had a big free agent sign and it made them the team to beat. (don't use moss with ne, that was an oustanding team to begin with, he just inflated thier numbers).

suggs and Scott are FAs and so far neather of them have been tagged

Point of the post is not "franchise tags" its about overspending for what you can get in the draft. A high dollar free agent is still just one knee injury away from "cash on the bench" take a look at boldin, he has been banged up all year.

You can make a case for New Orleans when they got Drew Brees.

What about Reggie White going to the Packers? That changed that franchise.

The 2001 Patriots. That off-season they signed Mike Vrabel, Antowain Smith, Marc Edwards, Otis Smith, Bobby Hamilton, Mike Compton and David Patten. All under the radar signings but all started for them.

EDIT: Forgot Bryan Cox.

Also when they won the next Super Bowl they had signed Corey Dillon.

Oh and who can forget the Raiders when they signed Rich Gannon.

The Rams traded for M. Faulk, he was the offense. His ability to run and catch FORCED teams to pay attention to him...even if he was just sitting on the bench...lol

Every single one! Every single championship team has won a championship by doing what you're supposed to do....build through the draft and "SUPPLEMENT THROUGH FREE AGENCY"....

...so yes, every single one has.

Kurt Warner was "signed" as a FA, not drafted.

NE signed Adalius Thomas and traded for MOss and went undefeated throughout the season.

NYG signed Sam Madison and a few others and won the championship.

You can't win the championship by "just" drafting rookies. You "build" your team through the draft and "supplement" it through FA. Remember, you only have so many draft picks. You can't fill an entire 53 man roster with only 7 draft picks, you know.

This is how the normal championship type team builds a team:

In year one, you sign a bunch of second tier FAs, (no BIG names) while you draft the building blocks in the draft....

Then, in year two, you sign a few second tier FAs and like "one" or "two" BIG names, while continuing to build your team with your draft picks. (this is the faze we are in now).

Finally, in year three, you sign a "few" BIG names, while continuing to build for the future with your draft picks....and you compete for the Super Bowl.

Thus, the normal blueprint of how to build a championship team.

Of course, in a year, only one team will win the championship. But several will compete/contend for it. The ones in the middle, that contended for a playoff berth, but not necessarily a championship, will just try their year 3 formula in the offseason.

But the teams that didn't contend for a playoff berth, will start over with a year one formula.

Others, who may have been decimated by injuries, but felt that if they had their guys would have contended, may just try again the following year with a year 3 formula...

But altogether, this is how you normally build a championship....building through the draft, while supplementing through FA.

In fairness to that Giants team the core of that team was built through the draft. Even when players started to go down the players that stepped up were rookies. Usually teams that plug-in Free Agents but build around the draft and the core of the team is from the draft are more successful.

That is what I said in my post. :err:

Didn't the giants sign Plaxico their superbowl year (or was it earlier)?

I know he shot himself this year, but last year he was a big part of thir championship run.

Moreover, there is also a long term part of the equation. Brad Johnson had a pretty good season the Bucs superbowl year (I know it was defense that won, but no one would suggest that he didn't play an important role say unlike Trent Dilfer for the Ravens), and he had been signed as a free agent the year earlier.

Build through the draft, but you can find a FA pick to be the final piece or two. That is not including role player pieces you can get through FA who are not big money superstars.

[Edit: Add on that NE last year, although they lost went 16-0, signed more than just moss. They signed Moss, Welker (who was huge), Stallworth, and A. Thomas)
