Nasty's Notes
Morning guys. Training camp is officially underway! :D It was hot as hell today (a black shirt was not a good idea lol) and I got there a little late, but I don’t think I missed much. There were no pads on, just helmets and shirts... and it was a pretty laid back practice... nothing too intense. They have changed the set up of the field since I was last there(I missed last seasons TC)... so the stands are now an end zone view of 2 fields instead of a sideline view. Each has its pros and cons... but I think I like the sideline view better...
Anyway... on to the details so you all can get your fix...
After individual drills, practice started out with some special teams. They had 6 players in a rotation fielding punts, in order (if you want to assume this is the order that they would play) Ginn, Hakim, Zo, Daniels, MBook, and Chambers. Brandon Fields can boot. There wasnt even a comparison in my eyes between him and Flinn. You didnt even have to look at the jersey number to know who punted which ball, Fields were always around probably 10-15 yards further than Flinn's. Ronnie was actually on the coverage unit a couple of times. Daniels actually dropped a punt when he heard some footsteps from Ronnie... who was coming in on him head on. Zo also dropped a punt. But the returners were facing east right into the morning sun, so that might have played a part in it as well. The coach pulled Zo aside and worked with him, coaching him.
Afterwards, they split up into offense on the right field, and defense on the left. Both sides lined up in formations and just went over different plays. The offense may have been installing new plays, no way to tell. These plays are run at about jogging speed... making sure that the players know their assignment. Defenders would line up at offensive positions to give the defense a front to look at on the left field, and had offensive players lined up at defensive positions to give the offensive players a front to look at on the right field. At one point... they actually put Beck out at CB! Dont worry, he didnt do anything more than jog... but it was still funny seeing him out there, lol.
Speaking of Beck, turns out... he is still a just a rookie. He didnt have the greatest practice today. He had some solid velocity on the ball, and a quick release... but his accuracy was off. He was throwing passes high, and one where he led Chambers way too much on a slant pattern. He wasnt horrible or anything, but he wasnt "pinpoint", like he had been in the rookie camps. Now dont flip out... some of it probably can be attributed to practicing with some different receivers than he had in the rookie camp. I wouldnt get to worried about it... and expect him to be better this afternoon.
Trent Green looked very crisp from what I saw. I was watching Beck a lot of the time... but when I was watching Green, he looked sharp and accurate.
After the offensive and defensive teams were split up, they then joined back together and ran plays. No linemen on either side, just the WRs and QB for the offense and the secondary and an LB or 2 for the defense. They did it on the far side of the left field, and lined everyone up that wasnt participating at the 50, which kinda formed a wall, and made it hard to see. I would not be denied... lol. I snuck up into the tented area up on top of the stands that has tables (and shade!). From up there I could see the whole drill... until they eventually kicked me out. But I was up there for pretty much all of it. Hakim made a catch really getting up high for a pass in traffic. Ginn looked fast, and didnt have much trouble getting off the line from what I saw... and is definitely one of the fastest players our there. I didnt see him drop a pass or punt all practice. He actually made a spectacular catch later in practice right in front of the stands. Ginn was lined up at the flanker, and ran a post route. Beck threw the pass pretty high, but Ginn had a one handed tip grab to get the TD. It got the fans all excited and cheering.
I didnt watch JAllen as much as I wanted to, I really only saw him on 2 plays. 1 bad, and 1 good. On one play, JAllen lined up on the wrong side of the defense, and almost left Hakim uncovered. He sprinted over and recovered though. On the other play I saw, Ginn ran a fly route down the sideline, and JAllen was step for step with him the whole way and blanketed Ginn. But thats all I saw. I am going to try to watch more of him this afternoon, to give you guys a better feel for how he looks.
Other notes:
- Soliai is a big *** mother ****er. And he is quick too, almost nimble sidestepping linemen. I really want to see what this guy looks like with pads on.
- Sutton was solid. The plays I saw, he was quick and caught the balls with his hands, not letting them get into his body.
- The Juggernaut made a really nice catch. Beck threw it high, and Mauia really got up high and made the catch. He then turned down field and lowered his shoulders at some defenders. They werent in pads... so the defenders got the hell out of his way... LOL! They tagged him, but made sure they were out of his path... :sidelol:
- Bell had a sure INT off of Hamdan, but dropped it.
EDIT:
- Ronnie looked like he was in great shape. Very cut, solid, and lean.
Thats all I really got guys. Feel free to ask any questions. I will be going back to the afternoon ones... so I should be able to get a better look at some of the guys I didnt get to see much of, like the offensive line...
