Dolphins summon former Eagles starting safety to team headquarters (Nate Allen)

The Dolphins, looking for a replacement for soon-to-be-released safety Isa Abdul Quddus, are bringing a former Philadelphia Eagles standout to team headquarters on Friday.
Nate Allen, who started 69 games for the Eagles over the first five years of his career, plans to visit with Dolphins officials on Friday, according to a league source.
Allen, 29, played the last two seasons with the Oakland Raiders.
Drafted 37th overall out of South Florida in 2010, Allen had 10 interceptions in five years as an Eagles starter.
He parlayed his very good 2014 season (which included four interceptions and three fumble recoveries) into a four-year, $23 million contract with the Oakland Raiders during the 2015 offseason.
But Allen torn his right MCL early in the 2015 season and was limited to five games and three starts the season. The Raiders released him last February to clear cap space but resigned him a few days later.
Last season, he appeared in 14 games, including four starts filling in for Karl Joseph, and had 24 tackles and two interceptions. (In the above photo, he’s going in for a tackle on Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.)
He earned high marks for his professionalism and special teams work.
Allen, 6-0, grew up in Fort Myers and attended Cape Coral High.
Here’s why the Dolphins are releasing Abdul-Quddus.
And here’s a veteran guard the Dolphins are bringing in on Friday.

Better than anything we currently have.

March 9th, 2017 at 10:04pm CST by Ben Levine The Dolphins are preparing to cut Isa Abdul-Quddus following a failed physical, and the team is already looking at alternative defensive backs. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the team will be meeting with free agent safety Nate Allen tomorrow.
After being selected by the Eagles in the second-round of the 2010 draft, Allen has spent the past two seasons in Oakland. The safety tore his MCL during his first season with the Raiders, limiting him to only five games (three starts). He rebounded in 2016, collecting 33 tackles, three passes defended, and two interceptions in 14 games (four starts). The 29-year-old also has extensive special teams experience.
The Dolphins has a hole in their starting lineup as they look for a safety to pair with Reshad Jones. Walt Aikens is currently slotted in as the starting free safety, while A.J. Hendy is the lone reserve safety on the roster.

We're in deep trouble if Walt Aikens is our starting safety. He has hips that are as stiff as a board. He's a special teamer and that's it with him.

Wpuld at the very least provide a serviceable starter and some much needed flexibility early in the draft if there is value somewhere othan than saftey in the first three rounds

I've been impressed with the way Walt Aikens has played on special teams, and from the sounds of things he's matured a lot in terms of professionalism the last year or so.

But yeah, I'm scared ****less if he's playing safety. He was really, really bad.

I don't know much about Allen. We just need somebody solid there, not a pro bowler. We were fine with IAQ when he was healthy and we scarcely got a defensive stop in 2+ games without him there.

Michael Thomas and Rambo were starting over him in a playoff game. That's all I need to know.

Nate has been banged up the last 2 seasons, but he definitely has more starting safety ability than Walt Aikens. He also is a very good special teamer as well.

IMO would upgrade Michael Thomas . . . if he can stay healthy.

Walt Aikens should never play another defensive snap in his life. Great special teams player tho

He is in jail after robbing the Saints

Still a capable ball hawk and I think if you plug him in next to the best SS in football he can revitalize his career. Give him a prove it deal and draft a safety in round 2 or 3. I love Marcus Williams in round 2 or maybe Marcus Maye slides to the third.

Point being we need a ball hawk back there. I'm good with Nate Allen too. He's younger and has been more consistent WHEN healthy.

Either way we've missed out on the first wave of safeties and we almost have to draft one early.
