Center Mike Pouncey is sidelined for at least the season's first four games after his hip injury was surgically repaired in late June, and newcomer Shelley Smith, the free agent Miami signed to play right guard but moved to center when training camp started, has been struggling with his snaps.

And that's where Garner, who started two games at center last season, enters the equations. Garner finished Wednesday's practice working with the starting offensive line as Smith's replacement.
"I'll play wherever they put me," Garner said. "Every year I come out here I'm trying to push for a starting spot. It is no different this year. I'm working my butt off, and have been working my butt off this whole offseason."

He should be. If they are not going outside the system to find a capable C, Garner should have been the guy in the first place.

I only question whether he can hold up for 7 or 8 weeks.

"Every year I come out here I'm trying to push for a starting spot. It is no different this year. I'm working my butt off, and have been working my butt off this whole offseason." -- Signed, every non-starter in the NFL.

Still, he has a chance to take that spot, we'll see come PS game 3.

In the 2 games he started at C last year, he played well.

It's my understanding that the reason they want Shelley Smith at C is that he's more of a run blocker rather than a pass blocker, and at C they can both protect him in pass blocking and make use of his run blocking ability in this system?

IMHO,
Garner will be the opening day center. He simply is more reliable and he has played well before.
All of the other options are gambles with the unknown.

I just recall Garner getting planted on his ass on a field goal attempt last year and can't get that image out of my head.
