The Detroit Pistons reached an agreement with free-agent center Nazr Mohammed on Tuesday, a day after losing Ben Wallace to the Chicago Bulls, a person within the NBA told The Associated Press.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because NBA free agents can't officially sign until July 12, said the team and Mohammed orally agreed to a five-year contract -- with the final year an option -- that will pay him about $5 million next season.

Mohammed started 30 games last season for the San Antonio Spurs, averaging 6.2 points and 5.2 rebounds. The 6-foot-10, 250-pound center most likely will replace Wallace in the starting lineup, allowing Rasheed Wallace to remain a power forward.

wow nazr and ben wallace...thats exactly like going from all star to stiff. Defensively its like 12 notches down.

Hindsight is 20/20 but that Darko pic was just a complete disaster, I mean they dump the guy to free themselves up for resigning Ben and wind up Nazr? Good luck next year.

So, you replace the DPOY with a New York Knicks cast off?? :roflmao:

Pistons are done; they'll be seeded 5-8 next year. Maybe 4 if they add more pieces.

What people fail to understand is - Ben Wallace means more to the Detroit Pistons than he'd mean to any other team. Detroit's (former) starting 5 are all so important that if they lose one, that's it. Those 5 fed off each other better than any team in the NBA. They all complimented each other so well. O'well, can't say I'm not happy to see the fall of the "Mighty" Pistons! Definitely a great & respected run though. It's time to suffer for trading Darko Milicic, and hell, maybe even Carlos Arroyo, for peanuts.

Next year, Chauncey Billups will opt out.

This is such a bad move on so many levels.

Nazr Mohammed plays well when he has an other post presence and he is free to get garbage points.

He is weak defensively to say the least. I wanted him for the heat...but the heat has SHAQ...so it would have made sense.

he is worthless if he doesn't get involved in the offense. The Pistons really had it good with their 4 offensive options and one guy doing all the dirty work.

I must say that this offseason has helped the Heat tremendously.

I dont know about "helped" Section. The team that gives Wade the largest headache just got better with Wallace. Now I was the first to criticize the signing by the Bulls, since he is not what they needed. However, they are still improved no matter how you look at it...

I disagree.

The were good when they could try to take SHAQ out of games by fouling him with 18 fouls to give.

They now have one guy...Wallace (and it's SHAQ's bucket boy of all people) to guard SHAQ. (gotta give him minutes)

One thing SHAQ is still very good at is this....you guard him one on one...he plays like a 24 year old. The Bulls already had a penchant for going to a matchup man to man late in games versus the Heat...this almost guarantees that this will continue...and thus...The Heat's 4th quarter domination will continue.

Oh, I still think the Heat are better than the Bulls... and like you said... Wallace is Shaq's b****... however, they are still improved no matter how you look at it. Picking up Ben didnt make them worse...

I have said I think Ben will be a shell of himself out of Detroit... and that Shaq will still have his way with him... but I just dont like the thought of the team that gives Wade the hardest time improving their team...

Fortunately the man that contributed in giving Wade such a hard time is likely a goner. People enjoy trashing Chandler because of his lack of offensive game but he is one of the more mobile bigs in the game. He played a large part in the harrassment of Wade. The more the Bulls move away from that scrambling defense to a more traditional one with Wallace as the anchor, the more it favors the Heat. Paradoxically, the Bulls will probably be a much better defensive team next year, yet a worse one when facing the Heat.

Excellent points...

You're kidding right? Chandler was never in for long in any of those games. He was in constant Foul Trouble guarding Shaq!

Guys, the Heat are still the better team, but by no means are the Bulls going to be easy. They gave the Heat all they could handle in the first round and now they actually have some talent at the C position (over rated or not - he is still 10x better than Chandler)...

The Bulls just knocked out Detroit out of contender status and put themselves up there. IN the East only the Heat are better (right now). There is talk Cleveland could make some moves - if they do they could jump to the forefront (Lebron will ALWAYS give them a chance to win), but right now they just don't have enough around Lebron.

My point exactly.
