Hey, I am not very familiar with how the NBA salary cap works... can someone break it down for me?

For instance... what is the mid-level exemption? And how does the rest of the cap work?

Thanks boys...

Anyone? Maybe Blueprint or Section??

It is very complicated.

But essentially..it is a soft cap.

You are allowed to go over to retain your own players.

Think of it as a bunch of salary slots you fill, and you can't go over the dollar amount of the slot that vacated.

From what I understand the salary cap basically trys to prevent you from overloading on new free agents that are not on the roster. You can go over the cap when you resign your own players but you will have to pay a luxury tax of I think 50% of $$$ you are over. So for example if you are over the cap right now you can still sign your player to a huge contract because he's currently on the roster. Mid level excepmtion I think lets you sign a player for the average salary even though you are over the cap. That pretty much the basic but its alot more complicated then the NFL.

So can someone explain the Mid-Level Exemption?

It is just one of the many exceptions to the rule that no team can surpass the salary cap. Any team over the cap can offer a player a contract starting at aproximately ~5 mil (the real value is a certain fraction of the total revenue...to be determined) for a max of 5 years. This contract can have max yearly increases of around 8%. The exception dollars can also be divided up to sign multiple players.
