ND to hire Kelly

Florida fans should be ecstatic over this. I still feel that if ND wanted Urban Meyer they woulda thrown too much money around for him to say no.

I think it's a terrible hire, by the way. They would have been better off getting Patterson, or even going after a big name like Gruden. I have a real hard time understanding why Kelly was their first choice.

I don't know why people think Notre Dame is such a great job. It's a horrible job! That place can't recruit like it used to. Most 18 year old kids don't know the history of Notre Dame football like kids did 10-20 years ago. Urban Meyer wasn't leaving...I don't know how many times he needs to say it. John Gruden wouldn't touch that place with a 3,000 foot pole. He LOVES his current gig and why would he go to a hell-hole like ND when he could have any Head Coaching job opening in the NFL if he wanted?

I think Notre Dame did as good as they could do.

Not being in a major conference, especially in the BCS era, is a killer and with their high academic entrance standards, they aint goin nowhere.

Yeah we all thought Saban wouldn't leave either. Fact is - if you throw enough money at a guy, they are GOING to go. They didn't even try. And Notre Dame is still recruiting like crazy for how bad they've been the past couple of years.
And are you serious about ND being hurt by not being in a major conference? That's the only reason they've been around .500. Anytime they have somewhat of a decent season they're in the BCS. If they went undefeated -- forget about it, they'd be in the title game. They lost to freakin UConn and Navy this year. If they were in a major conference, they would have had 2-3 wins this year.

Dude definitely needs to upgrade on D too. That was a big problem for him at Cincy.

And that was the big problem at ND this year. That's why it didn't make sense. If they wanted an offensive coach, they should have went balls to the wall for the BEST guy out there, not the best available guy, if that makes sense. If they wanted a small time hire, Patterson should've been the guy.

I dont think Kelly will have much of a problem recruiting at ND....they can still get some of the top recruits in the country despite being down...

But I agree with kp....the problem at ND is DEFENSE.....somebody has to get in there and build a DEFENSE....

The hire of Kelly is basically a step DOWN from Weis offensively....if for whatever reason they couldn't have landed Meyer or Stoops....then they may have been better off just keeping Weis for another year instead of having to shell out all that money just to hire a more generic version of what they just got rid of...

I don't see how you can't feel terrible for the kids at Cincy....they played their ***** off all season to get to a BCS bowl only to see their head coach ditch them......we see it every year almost...

College football is the best sport in America IMO....but it's also the most sinister...

notre dame's problem is defense and has been since willingham left. they just can't get the recruits they used to - and it sucks b/c many of the top recruits in the country typically have ND as one of their 'maybe' schools - but they always end up going elsewhere. i don't see kelly as a huge upgrade over weiss either - i've said gruden was their best bet since the day weiss got fired - they should've waited longer and weighed out all their options before making such a quick hire on a guy who would've gone to ND no matter what with no questions asked.

no way meyer was leaving gainesville. recruiting is his passion and he's in the best place in the country to do just that.

Brian Kelly is a skinnier Charlie Weis.....all offense and no Defense. Should've just offered 7-8 Mil a year for Urban or Stoops and they would've left. It's not like ND doesn't have the money. Or why not make a more serious run at Harbaugh, he has to deal with similar academic standards at Stanford.

Patterson is going to be a great hire for somebody that will give him a big time job.

I don't get why this argument is so popular. Weiss regularly brought in top 10 classes. He even got a couple of the most hyped prospects we've seen in the last decade in Te'o and Clausen. Notre Dame isn't going to compete with whoever is dominating So Cal, Texas, and Florida for obvious reasons but they still have more talented players coming in than 99% of the schools out there. With recruits like that BCS expectations aren't unreasonable.

And Meyers is some defensive mastermind? A coach is only as good as the people they surround themselves with and Kelly is going to have a chance to bring in some talented people with the budget he has.

Most 18 year old kids didn't know the history of USC and Oklahoma 10 years ago either. Having that history and tradition can still be a great sell and reviving the history and tradition can be a great sell.

No, Meyer is not a defensive mastermind....just one of the top two coaches in the country, who does surround himself with great coaches. Kelly couldn't even get a coach to slow down a Big East offense, what do you think will happen when they play USC and Michigan every year? I just think ND went the wrong direction with this hire, they needed a defensive minded guy. They tried the offensive guru route with Weis, how did that work out for them?
