Ndamukong Suh contract will drown Dolphins (Grantland)

Read this earlier, i mean i don't disagree. Forces us to get creative at other positions.
Any time a non-QB player chews up that much space, it puts more pressure on your GM.

Sometimes you have to put trust that the players you drafted over the past couple years can become starters. Tripp, Taylor, Davis, Turner...you have to put faith that the developed talent can perform in situations where it's needed.

Great article. It really shows how complicated evaluating free agency is. Cap space is different for each team but can really not be an issue if you have a good GM drafting productive players. That is why now for now I mark this as a good move for the Dolphins. However, the writer is correct that you better have a couple great drafts, this year and next year or Suh will be playing with scrubs and your offense won't get help for Tannehill.

Whatever. Either way this team was set to either sink or swim for this year. It's gonna get blown up if it fails. The good news is someone like Suh can actually be traded if it doesn't work out perfect because his contract, though large, is more fitting than Wallaces.

I'd agree a lot more with this article if the author would have taken even just a second to see what the Fins cap space looks like in 2016. Obviously he didn't do that.

Agree. Many of the 'media' do no research to see how things project for the team down the road. Plus, with the caps increasing over the next few years there will be money to spend.

As I did say to a fellow Dolphins fan that I know, Hickey needs to hit a home run with this draft though.

Yeah, he makes it as if our cap situation is a disaster. It's not.

We need good drafts, and we need Tannehill to take it to the next level. No **** Sherlock.

We all know Jenkins has been playing well, but I think McCain, Tripp, and Jordan will break out this year at the linebacker spot. McCain already has shown flashes blocking a few punts on ST.

Not a great article....more of a knee kerk reaction....that does not take into account the amount of wasted trash on this team that will be leaving....as well as the large amount of cap space that will clear next year.

In essense...Suh is replacing three non productive contracts....the other two spots can be filled by low cost first contracts by new people.

yeah, I feel Miami let go of everyone they should have, with or without Suh. And if Miami didn't land Suh, then they have a ton of money, and a good chance of not picking up anyone that great. Sure, the theory of picking up Franklin, Julius Thomas, Knighton, etc is nice, but fact of the matter, all those players could have chosen another team. then what?

In this article also intrigues me that Jerod Mayo could be cut. :ponder:

Suh is not your typical free agent. Players of his caliber usually never and shouldn't hit the open market. The Lions mistake allowed the other 31 players to grab a free agent you see maybe once every couple of decades. To win that sweepstakes is special and something I am sure EVERY team wishes they won.

Sure the Dolphins might have to be a little more creative with their salary cap going forward, but the team is not in hell as some have suggested. I think before the Suh deal they something crazy like $40-50 million in space in 2016. Sure Suh will take up a chunk, but there will still be plenty of room to extend Tannehill and Pouncey. I don't think this means that Miami is going to collapse in on itself because of this deal, not at all. What I think needs to happen though is for more draft to be hits. We can't continue to have draft classes that completely flame out. Last year's class with James and Landry was a good start, but this year's draft is pretty important. If you hit on draft picks you get cheap talent for a good length of time.

But even after signing the biggest free agent in decades, you knew the same cries would happen: "Dolphins overpaid", "Dolphins cap will be destroyed". blah blah blah. Even after Suh, Miami still has cap space and is continuing to chase free agents. These cries are no different in my opinion than the old dried up claim of "No one wants to play for Miami". We even saw that by a local beat writer just a few weeks ago that no one wanted to play here. Not only is that not true, but the biggest name is coming here.

Signing Suh reminds me of when the Packers managed to bring in Reggie White, the big difference is that White was an inspirational, leader of men type player.

Suh is not that type of guy, but as a force on the DL he will improve the entire defense. Fede played well enough to get some more playing time.

The DEs are probably writing lists of stuff they will be buying with their incentive bonuses already. Sacks should go up, the back end needs to be addressed still
