Need all of your opinions (regarding draft)

Ideally you use free agency to plug your gaping holes (OL) before the draft so that you can draft the best player available. Jeff Ireland never quite learned this so he had to "part ways" with the Dolphins. The new GM should go after an OL or 10 before the draft. This team has too many holes to draft based on need only.

I've always felt that free agency should be used to fill the gaps where the draft is weak at a position of need. In other words the team has a need (hypothetically) at DE, the draft is not deep at DE so you look to free agency to fill the need and address other spots in the draft.

The draft should be where you build the foundation of the football team. We've never done it that way. As a matter of fact I'm not sure what we've been doing. Seems like we drafted for depth more than finding starters or difference makers. We drafted Odrick when we already had Starks and Langford (and Merling who sucked), traded up to get Daniel Thomas when we already had Reggie Bush in house, drafted Clay when we already had Fasano, drafted Egnew when we already had Fasano and Clay, Miller when we had Bush and Thomas...in the process we passed up some playmakers and positions we needed to fill...like taking Dion Jordan last year when we have Wake and Vernon and we needed O-line pretty bad.

Hopefully the new GM has a draft strategy that doesn't look like he's flying by the seat of his pants.

If we were to draft need, then are NEED is to do a better job winning in the trenches on both sides of the football.

Now having said that, drafting BPA is still the best decision to make. No RB will be regarded that highly to pick at #19. There are five players I really like early on at #19, and luck for us, three of those playes actually addresses our need. I like OT-Cyrus Kouandjio, OT-Taylor Lewan, TE-Eric Ebron, TE-Jace Amaro, and DT-Louis Nix III.

Most importantly, our offseason needs to be dedicated towards addressing the 0-line through the draft and FA.

Need to draft BPA, you don't draft need.

Once you start drafting need you start reaching, once you start reaching you start having bad drafts, once you have bad drafts you are like the last decade of the Miami Dolphins.

Don't be like the last decade of the Miami Dolphins, get directv.

I agree with everything but I will never get directv again.

CB Darqueze Dennard, FS Calvin Pryor, TE Eric Ebron, OT Taylor Lewan, OG Zack Martin are all possibilities depending on FA, and what the board says when Miami is up to pick.

You should use free agency for needs and the draft for strictly the best player on your board. For example, we should target OT Eugene Monroe, OT Zach Strief, OG Geoff Schwartz, C/G Evan Dietrich-Smith, and RB Knowshon Moreno. Outside of Eugene Monroe, no one on this list is viewed as a long term starter. But, they are pretty good "bridge starters" until you find someone better. All of the aforementioned names are upgrades over their predecessors. So they should sign them to 1-2 year short term deals. Monroe deserves a long term contract. Once you hit on enough picks in the mid rounds because you aren't drafting for example the best "tackle" on the board in round 2. You are drafting the best PLAYER on the board. So eventually, you will draft players in the mid rounds that end up being better than the bridge starters so you move on. Or you sign a long term starter in FA. Just go BPA available every pick. The best 2 GM's in the league Ozzie Newsome and Ted Thompson do.

I am discussing with my buddy on what we need to pick in the 1st rd. He thinks we try to get our hands on one the top RBs like Trey Mason or BPA at RB at our pick, I am leaning more towards stock piling the Oline and taking a decent RB to compete with Miller later in the draft.
What do you guys feel we should target earlier in the draft Oline or a stud RB? Lets assume we DONT get any players in FA for either of these postions and we use the draft strictly to fill these 2 positions.

IMO If we Assume we dont get any OL in FA then we very simple , we have to go after OL because thats our Biggest need ,i just cant see us going RB in the 1st rd NOT when we have bigger issues , if we dont have OL the QB dont have time to throw , and a RB wont do us any good, because he wont have a lane to run through, but im glad we have FA , so we dont have to just expect that the draft is our only priorty , with FA we can atleast grab 2-3 OL that has experience , and then we can go into the draft ABLE to pick BPA , and i would look in the 1st rd either another OL or a LB , we can find a RB IN the 2nd or 3rd rd to help Miller in the run game , i would hope if we dont find a very good OL in the 1st , then i would hope for a beast LB sitting there at 19 ...

Miami should even make a pick in the 1st round. You try hard as hell to trade back into the 2nd. When you finally pick you go best lineman available. Dont matter rather T, G, or C you take him.

Need is a poor evaluator of talent as they say, however, unless there is an elite player for his position such as an Eric Ebron at TE, Darqueze Dennard at CB or some other player that may be the consensus #1 rated player for their position BPA at #19 will most likely be someone on the OL or DL. Drafting a RB at #19 when the position is so dependent on the O-line is like literally putting the cart before the horse.

How could you target anyone until after FA? However, IF our new GM to be picks a RB in the first, he will have a plane flying in preseason.

IMO its VERY HARD to build a Offence line Just through the draft because we have ONLY 1 PICK in each rd and theres Not going to be Talent in every rd , i mean in every rd we pick in , Now if we had say 2 first rd picks it would be alot easier to do that but when you have just one pick in each rd , the Talent you are looking for might done be gone , and its hard to find 5 linemen when you have 7 picks sometimes 6 , and it might take 3-4 years to get enough talent for the line maybe more , if other teams are needing the same thing we are ..
