Hello,
I have seen articles saying that we have taken steps back from last year's team due to our Free Agency losses and have seen ESPN rank us last. I do realize this is still early in Free Agency and Draft has not happened yet for 2018's team to fully take shape but what's your opinion so far - a net positive or a net negative? Major losses - Suh, Landry, Pouncey. Major gains - R. Quinn, J. Sitton, Kilgore, A. Wilson, Amendola, Frank Gore, Brock O. and resigning W. Hayes, Sam Young. I believe we may miss Suh the most. Football is a Team sport so may be we should look at the effects on the units/team rather than individuals. Looking at Units not individuals, I feel losing Landry but getting Amendola and Wilson is an improvement on the WR unit or at least a wash - 2 players providing depth over 1 player. The OL is definitely an improvement. Does Quinn and W. Hayes at DT provide close to what Suh provided? F. Gore at 35 is a plus. In my opinion, a definite net positive overall. Your opinion please? No question, seems like the culture and professionalism has improved. Again, this is a speculative exercise as only the performance on the field will tell but a discussion at this point nonetheless. Thanks.

Suh huge hole double negative, Pouncey for a former low round or free agent center from Seattle maybe a push, Parkey kicker still huge hole, Tmmons still a hole, Laundry 4 year all pro replaced by 2 players one injury prone and older and the other a part time starter so loss of a roster spot so this is a negative, signed a all pro defensive end at a position that we deepest in talent area improved, Fasano loss still a hole filled by a free agent type,Thomas special teams ace and could back up the slot so an hole, Ajayi gotta add was on last years roster still looking to find his replacement still a hole. So basically the oline is a push to maybe improved from this time last year, Defensive line os weaker, Tight end weaker, running back less depth, no kicker, wide receiver weaker or at very best a slight push, linebackers are weaker, cornerbacks improved and saftey a push. Punter is the same and the backup QB is worse. Do the math not looking good.

The actual team is poss a bit weaker but I think going forward they're in a better position. Landry and Suh are two big losses but I totally understand those decisions. Very happy they've changed things on the O Line. Drake and Grant were 2 of the guys I was most looking forward to seeing anyway and they're both still here. I can never be too disappointed with a team that has Wake in it either. Gase has a couple of years experience and he probably feels for the first time that this is HIS team. Get a TE, LB and decent kicker and it's not too shabby a team. I don't think the play offs will happen but think it'll be a step in the right direction. And if it's shocking then so be it, we get to have a bit of a moan and a whinge, something all fans enjoy!

Bring it on

I dont know overall, but I am all in on Gase. So.....I believe.

I just hope Gase doesnt get fired prematurely, beause from what I have heard he will be picked up in a nanosecond if he does. The good news is Ross LOVES Gase.

tBUM needs to go though.

Yea Gase has to stay. Tbum not so much.

Ewe are not in a worse position .... and likely better than we were last year at this point, less a decent DT addition.

The draft will fix that right away .... and leave only LB + TE (also in the draft as MUST fills) .... would like another S, but not a hard requirement this year .... certainly would be nice though!!

In my opinion the return of Tannehill makes it a net positive. After the draft it should be no doubt at all that this iteration is much better.

I am not a psychologist, but I believe that at some level the gross over-payment of Suh affects the psyche of other players. I liked having Suh on our team, but that salary was an insidious cancer eating away at the team.

To answer the original OP question: I think we are better. however, our draft has to hit big.

  • I am hopeful that having a team with a better balance of income will be more unifying along with the some of the team-first personalities that have been acquired (Gore).
  • Tannehill back at the helm. Watching Cutler only for 1 year was unbearable. Can't imagine how the Bears endured.
  • I am also cautiously hopeful in that offensive line will be more cohesive if they all practice together. Even if the center may be slightly less talented.

It's difficult to answer without seeing what is to be accomplished in the draft. Miami arguable lost its best player on offense in Landry and its best player in defense with Suh.

At least in Landry's case, the team signed some viable solutions and seems to have a good plan moving forward. I like the Sitton move as he is a tremendous upgrade at guard. Kilgore is probably as good as Pouncey and less injury-prone. Gore is a nice complement to Drake. Wilson at wide receiver could be interesting and might mean less playing time for Parker. I like the addition of Quinn at DE and re-signing Hayes, which was unexpected.

The Suh move is a bit of a head-scratcher since it comes with $22 million dead money next year. Plus, it makes DT a weakness IMO. Phillips could emerge, but I wouldn't put all my eggs in that basket. Right now, as the roster is assembled, teams will have no problem running against Miami. That's where the draft has to concentrate.

I expect the Dolphins to draft a playmaker at linebacker and a defensive tackle early.

How this change is viewed will come down to whether our DT solution is adequate or not. Arguably, we improved at the other positions, but if our DT's go from very good to very poor, it will undo all of the potential gains and then some. We may not have had an effective defense, but Suh played very well, and played 85% of the snaps, which is an insane amount for a start 300+ pound defensive lineman. We have a massive volcano sized hole to fill in the middle. Suh demanded double teams ... nobody on our roster was exceptional vs. the single team, and none of them will consistently command a double team.

Unless we add a top notch DT, our DL will struggle to generate inside pressure and stop the run. It makes a lot of sense for us to draft Vita Vea. Not the most popular pick, but we have a glaring weakness in the middle of that DL.
