Hey guys, I was going over our defensive lineup and I couldn't help but notice that we could be poised for an excellent defensive year thanks to our new personnel and how they can be used in specific situations. I just wanted to hear what everyone thinks.

For example:

3rd and Long (3 or fewer receivers):
We can field our standard 4 man secondary but our front 7 could consist of Langford/Merling and JT at the ends, Ferguson in the middle, Channing and Akin in the middle, with Wake and Porter as our outside backers. This combination puts 2 great pass rushers on the field (possibly 3 if Wake is as good as we hope) Channing and Akin are both excellent cover linebackers, and Ferguson and Langford/Merling will occupy at least three blockers between them.

In this package, our ability to cover the middle, our ability to keep the offense honest, and our pass rushing, we could have one of the lowest third down conversion allowances in the league IMO; which is typically a direct indicator of overall success as a defense. (Last year, the top three teams in third down conversion rate [PIT, BAL, PHI] were also the top three in overall defense)

Tell me what you think, and try to think of some on your own, this is just one example. What is the best way to utilize this teams talent and in what situations should they be used?

see Steelers and Giants for creative blitz packages, but you're right we're loaded with pass rushers this year.

3rd and long:
DT = Starks (better rushing skills),
DE = JT and Merling,
OLB= Porter, Wake
Safeties = Wilson, Bell
DBs = W. Allen, V. Davis, S. Smith, Eric Green

With this lineup you could play Davis and or Green or Smith up in a press coverage look and blitz them off the corners to add even more angles.

Out of the threesome of Porter, Taylor, or Wake two would end up one on one with someone.

The problem is how many team put 3 or less receivers in the 3rd down package?

NE as its the biggest division rival will ogo 4 wide with faulk at RB as its standard 3rd down package.

You got wes in the middle matched up on a LB. Moss and joey/greg on the other end.
if faulk get release you believe a OLB is gong to cover him?

more importantly when you bring a creative blitz you will leave joey.moss .wes or faulk wide open or someone 1 on 1 on moss and all brady had to do is throw along the side lines.

Idk about Taylor as a rushing DE, he would have much more leverage rushing from a stand up position from the tackle rather than being inside with a guard/center

.

Channing and Akin are both excellent cover linebackers,

I kind of disagree that Crowder is a good cover LB but agree with you that Ayodele is a good cover LB.

Crowder has been mediocre in coverage.

I remember hearing that there's a package that they installed to have Porter, JT, and Wake on the field at the same time. Talk about scary..

Here's one to think about. Ferguson and Soliai on the line (about 650 lbs of beef), 4 DB's, and JT, Porter, Wake, Roth, and Ayodele at "LB." Ayodele stays back, as he is our best cover LB and shadows the RB.

The other four have options up the kazoo. Roth or Wake up the gut behind the beef, JT and Porter from the outside, or maybe inside, or maybe both on one side, or maybe Roth and Wake move to the outside and JT and Porter move p to DE's.

Damn, I'm on overload with options.
