I was hoping that Heizenga would have seen the error of his ways in giving Saban the "keys to the kingdom". IMO, that kind of responsibility is too much for one person to handle. I would like the coach to coach and have the GM handle personnel. However, based on these quotes from Pete Carroll, it seems that Wayne is looking for a coach that will have full control of football operations once again:

From the Miami Herald:
''This was the one instance I've come in contact with what has all the elements I have talked about,'' Carroll said. ``[Huizenga] has structured a program where the head coach has the entire say, from top to bottom.

``It's a one-voice program. I don't think there are any other situations like that in the NFL.''

From the Sun Sentinel:
"[Huizenga's] like the only guy I know who's in the NFL that actually hires guys to do everything," Carroll told the Los Angeles Times in his first public comments since meeting with Huizenga in Liberia, Costa Rica on Sunday. "That's why I thought it was worthwhile talking, hearing him out and talking. ... I was just really curious about how his expectations for running the club fell into place.

What do you guys think? Should the next coach have full control? How many Super Bowl winning coaches in the last 10 years have had full control?

I think the only candidate we are interviewing that would get full control would be Pete Carroll. I doubt anyone else would get it.

I don;t know enough about the front offices of other teams, so, in the lasst 10 years the SuperBowl coaches have been:

SuperBowl Winner Loser
XXX Barry Switzer, Cowboys Bill Cowher, Steelers
XXXI Mike Holmgren, Packers Bill Parcells, Patriots
XXXII Mike Shanahan, Broncos Mike Holmgren, Packers
XXXIII Mike Shanahan, Broncos Dan Reeves, Falcons
XXXIV Dick Vermeil, Rams Jeff Fisher, Titans
XXXV Brian Billick, Ravens Jim Fassel, Giants
XXXVI Bill Belichick, Patriots Mike Martz, Rams
XXXVII Jon Gruden, Buccaneers Bill Callahan, Raiders
XXXVIII Bill Belichick, Patriots John Fox, Panthers
XXXIX Bill Belichick, Patriots Andy Reid, Eagles
XL Bill Cowher, Steelers Mike Holmgren, Seattle

How many of these 17 coaches have had full control the season they made the Super Bowl?

Wayne is a great businessman, but appears to be a very SLOW learner. Our next HC should not have full control.

I too almost shat myself in disbelief when I read that this morning. Has Wayne learned nothing from the past 10 years!!?!!?!

Let the HC concentrate on, ah, let's see, COACHING!!!

Bad idea to go down that road again...Saban had nowhere to run after just 2 seasons of "Total Control". I think the pressure is too much when the losses pile up. There is a reason this is not the norm in the NFL.

The problem is Wayne doesn't know how to run a successful football team. He is a business owner that thinks football should be run the same way as his other businesses. Hire one man to run the football team. I totally disagree with him on this. Thats part of the reason the Dolphins have been stuck in this rut lately.

I hope not, I don't think any coach should get full control. there are GMs for a reason, use them

I would not put a lot of stock into Carroll's comments. I think Huizenga is exploring a lot of different options, and giving control to the RIGHT head coach is just one of them. If we were to hire a Bill Cowher or Bill Parcells, I could see the coach having full control over the football operations, but it is unlikely that we will hire a coach of that experience.

I believe the coaching search will ultimately end with one of the many assistant coaches we have interviewed being the hire. That coach will probably share personnel input with Randy Mueller. I believe that Mueller's continued presence at Dolphins' headquarters is a good sign that he will stay on and direct the player personnel operations.

In my humble opinion......

To me, this seems like one of those subjects where people on both sides of the fence can make equally compelling arguments.
On one hand, a Coach could say it's like trying to make the perfect Cookie with a recipe that's not his own....
On the other hand, one could say... GM's are the experts on personnel matters & contracts, So just Coach the team your front office puts together for you....

I think the process should be more like.... the GM need to understand the coach's presonnel requirements to run their schemes and find talent that matches that scheme. Then its the coach's job to get the talent to produce. This is why Pioli and Bellichek (sp?) work so well together. There has to be TREMENDOUS collaboration. Saban didn;t have that cause as it sounds thru different media reports, he had no relationship with those people.
