Can somebody elaborate on the new coin flip rule that the NFL approved last week? It says that teams can now defer until the second half.

Impact: Significant. NFL officiating chief Mike Pereira said the majority of college coaches in 2007 opted to defer and receive the second-half kickoff.

"I think you may see deferrals later in the year as you have weather issues," said Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who is the co-chairman of the NFL's competition committee. "If you've got a club that's known for playing good defense, you could see them [defer]. It's going to be interesting to see what the philosophies are going to be."

What exactly has changed? The way it was before the team winning the coin toss could choose if they wanted to kick or receive, right?

Before if you chose to kickoff in the beginning of the game the opposing team would have the option to receive in the second half. Meaning you kick off to begin the game and to begin the second half. This is why it was SO rare for teams to defer.

With the new rule if you choose to kickoff to begin the game you automatically receive to start the second half. Same as college rules.

Wow I honestly never knew that. I thought if you kickoff to start the game you automatically receive after the half.

Wow, I didn't know that either. So basically if you chose to kick off in the first half, the opposing team could receive the ball at the beginning of each half? That doesn't make much sense.

I always thought that it was the way it has been changed to now. That the kicking team always received in the second half.

I never paid much attention to it. In video games it's always switched to the opposing team, lol...

It's the same for high school as well.

this is off slightly.

OLD RULE
previously, there was no option to defer. you win the toss, you get to choose to

a) kickoff or receive OR
b) which goal you wish to defend

the loser of the toss got to choose the other option.

at the start of the 2nd half, the loser of the toss gets first pick between a and b and the winner of the toss gets to choose the other option

NEW RULE

now, the winner of the toss will have the option to DEFER 1st choice between a and b until the 2nd half. so the loser of the toss would then have 1st pick between a and b in the 1st half and the winner has that choice in the second half.
