I have been thinking about a hybrid d if we were to sign JT. Not to go all madden on you guys but one of my favorite defensive formations is the nickel 1-5-5. Could you imagine putting that big dog nose tackle (Ferguson, or possibly McDaniel if he shows the athleticism that we are gambling on) along with Wake, JT, Porter, CC, and your choice of Roth, Ayodele, Torber, Anderson, Lankford, or Merling. To go along with our drafted CB in the secondary, W. Allen, J. Allen, Y. Bell, and G. Wilson. Guys I am really thinking that this good be a deadly formation in passing situations. I don’t know about anyone else but I like the athleticism and the versatility that this package good provide us. We have seen recently what the Patsies were able to do a few years back and the Steelers recently have been able to do with those defensive schemes that don’t fit the typical mold and without having to put your hands on the ground really confuses offensive lines. You could possibly rush six or drop eight and disguise it very well. We were able to create an offensive formula with the wildcat that made us a challenge to prepare for now we may be able to create even more of a nightmare for opposing coaches during the film sessions and weeks leading into a match-up with the Fins. I realize that there are some obvious variables here and therefore I thread with caution...LOL:chuckle:

I like it in Madden. Or is that the Nickel 3-3-5?

Who knows what wrinkles we will form this year in the D. Lets see Pasqualoni at work

It would have to be run on 3rd and long. 5 yards or less to go would be a first down for any halfway-decent team. Plus, we don't have enough ILBs I would be confident enough in for this formation.

I know the Patsies and Steelers have used a 2-5-4 or something very similar. Even Wanny used a 3-5-3 to slow down Tom Brady back in the day so "Exotic" defensive formations are nothing new.

I am fine w/ anything except that ridiculous 3-3-5 that was so common in the Mtn West a few yrs ago. It was run by Air Force, New Mexico, UNLV, & BYU as a counter to Urban Meyer's scheme when he was @ Utah.

Not stating that anything is neccesarily new only the mere fact that we have enough firepower with jt to have a massive pass rush in obvious passing situations. There have been variations of several basic premises for years but since we made the wildcat a household name on offense I figured our defensive players should have a niche or formation of their own, because there growth last year and the years to follow will be every bit as important and exciting as anything our offense does or did.

id prefer the 2-5-4

langford + Merling

Porter - Roth - Wake - Anderson - Hopefully draft pick if not Ayodole (fomer DE and crowder rushing the passer is as much use as a chocolate teapot)

W Allen - Hopefully another draft pick / Jallen - Wilson - Bell

If you want to see something like that watch tape of the Bills/Fins game....Like...'93. 2 linemen, 5 backers and 4 DBs. We killed the Bills that game..lol. The big man Tony Paige with two TD catches.

a 3-5-3 isn't all that exotic for a basic 3-4. all we have to do is move Bell closer to the line and have him play like an additional LB.

the INT return by Merling against the Jets was basically out of a 2-5-4.

The patiots run this alot on 3rd down in 2007 with Jarvis green the bigger pash rushing end as the only DL. In this formation Jarvis green rushes with all the 5 LB walking around adiaus thomas, vrabel, brushi, seau and colvin and rushing 3/4/5 . this is the year they racked up 47 sacks second most in NFL after the gaints and most came in this formation. But this is very effective but you never saw that more as most were not healthy in 2008.

sometimes 2 LB brushi and seau came out for seymour and vince.

1-5-5 or 3-3-5 are the 3rd package the pats run

True. BYU converted recently from the 3-3-5 to a 3-4.

Curious? Does that mean the Colts play a 4-4-3 w/ Sanders playing closer to the LOS?
