Pats Defense is ranked 8th overall in the NFL.

Passing defense is ranked 14th

Rushing defense is ranked 3rd (only behind the Ravens and the Cowboys).

Their defense is ranked 4th in the NFL in sacks (Dolphins are 7th).

The Pats only allow a league best 15.7 points per game which is the best in the NFL (Seattle is 2nd at 17.9).

Here is the Pats 2 deep....

Bellicheat has 4 former Rutgers players on is defense, all from the Greg Schiano era, including two starters in the back seven in Logan Ryan, and Devin McCourty. Duran Harmon is a back up free safety, while former Fin Freeny mans the MLB.

Starting from the DB's, the Pats have guys that are not super athletic, but smart guys, that make few mistakes, and that can tackle. Ryan is an aggressive CB, with solid technique. Butler has come into his own and can now be considered a top 5 CB in the NFL. Chung has always been solid against the Fins, and McCourty is a Pro Bowl level FS. Solid group overall, but one on one, none of these guys can stop DVP. Stills and even Landry will not break tackles against these guys.

Looking at the Pats linebackers, it's almost a night and day difference from what we have.

Jamie Collins is 6'3" 250lbs. Huge guy, solid tackler. Freeny, the former Fin is 6'2", 255lbs. Hightower is a massive 6'3" 255lbs. Bellicheat loves big linebackers and these guys are huge, can move, and are great against the run and the pass. Jay will have to bring his lunch Sunday as it will not be an easy task wearing these guys down. Their height is also good in their pass defense against opposing TE's. What Miami must do, is throw the ball to Drake and Williams out of the backfield. Their is no way a 260lb can cover a 220lb RB down field - this has to be one area to try to exploit.

When you look at the Pats D-line, I am not impressed, however, they get the job done. As mentioned above, these guys have more sacks than we do...this shocked me. I am not a Chris Long fan at all, however he has been solid. Alan Branch is huge at 6'6" 350LBS. Jabaal Sheard (a Ft. Lauderdale native) is in his prime right now and also playing well. The other DT is the feisty Malcolm Brown, who has also been having a solid - yet not spectacular year. Anthony Johnson (another former Fin) is a backup D-line player for the Pats...I am not sure how much he plays as I hate the Pats, and will not watch them if they are not playing the Fins.

Since we are playing at home, I think Jay will have the energy to run the ball. I don't think our offensive line will get much movement, but I think Jay will be able to move the ball, but it won't be in the 7 to 10 yard chunks he gets during his 200 yard games. He will not be able to run through the Pats 260lb LB's.

I think to win this game, we are going to need play action passes down field. This is the game where we need DVP to play his best game. Dion Sims will also be needed to keep the Pats LB's honest, he doesn't really have a side advantage, but he must make them aware that he is a pass catching threat. However, and as mentioned above, Matt Moore must throw it to Williams, Drake, and Ajayi out of the back field - this is a key match up - speed vs. the Pats size. Gase may even want to get Grant 2 or 3 touches this game via screen plays.

Honestly, since we are playing at home, I don't think these guys can stop us from moving the ball (thank you Gase) - however, the key is, will they stop us from scoring? Scoring TD's is going to be the key (as usual)....because I don't think we'll be able to stop their offense (even with Amendola ruled out).

Well coached, but aside from 2 players in the secondary, no one that you have to gameplan for.
They do not have elite players on their defense.
The key is to make them think and adjust. They are well coached to defend tendencies. Game plan has to be a bit unpredictable (remember the wildcat game). Gase has to able to design multiple plays from basic formations and to play away from their tendencies in the red zone or critical 3rd downs.
When you watch the Pats defense it almost seems as if they are in the offensive huddle or know the play before the ball is even snapped. BB sometimes appears psychic or he has a mole in every teams' facility.

I have a feeling those disciplined CB's and LB's might have a filed day with Moore. People used to complain about Tannehill locking onto his WR's and I have yet to hear nearly a peep about people criticizing Moore about it, & he eye bangs the **** out of his #1 read like he is a 16 year old watching porn for the first time.

Gase has his work cut out for him this week that's for sure. Even more so now that his QB doesn't have the same authority to get the offense into the best play.

great quote, and yes I have noticed this as well...if Gase can coach up Moore this week, and win one playoff game, Ross needs to give the guy a raise immediately...

Moore needs to be smart this week, get the ball out quick, yes....but you can go long on their smart, great tackling corners....we will not win this game nickel and dime-ing down the field (unless Drake and Williams catch 5+ balls each - and we haven't seen that yet).

If Ginn could beat Revis deep in his prime, DVP & Stills should be able to beat a less talented Butler and Ryan down the field...

Very well coached....looking at this again, I think we need to at least try to pound Jay to the BA and Tunsil side....go directly at Chris Long....Urbik is going to have his hands full...I like the unpredictability angle...run new plays from the same formations we've run on film all year...

Don't want to get too cute....but 1 or 2 Drake wildcat plays maybe.....a pass by former QB Marquis Gray....a Tony Nathan like catch and ladder play to a trailing Jakeem....and then pound Jay up there guts to keep them honest....**** the Pats

Love breaking down the Patriots D. Wish I had more time to dive into what they are up to the past few weeks. They are the most fundamentally sound coached defense in the NFL. Excellent unit.

3-3-5 personnel, 50 front

In some recent games a new look for the Patriots defense has been a 5 man front, but not in the typical way you might expect. It's essentially out of a sub defense. A Nickel 3-3-5 package as a base D.

3 Defensive Lineman.
-1 Nose Tackle at Zero tech (lined up directly over the Center), and 2 Defensive Ends at the 5 tech (lined up inside of the Offensive Tackles) which can be moved inside, say to the 3 tech (outside of Guard), for different looks and exchanges.

3 Linebackers.
- 1 ILB stacked directly over Nose Tackle, and 2 OLB on the LOS b/w the 6 -9 techs depending on open/closed side and TE leverage.

5 Defensive Backs
- 2 CBs, 1 Slot CB, Free, and Strong Safety. Coverage shells vary and are situational.

Here's a few looks.

[vine]596iTha7Vu9[/vine]

All of the personnel are interchangeable and play a wide variety of positions and snap counts. But as with any Belichick squad the defensive looks are always changing. There were a multiple times vs both Broncos and the Jets which they played a more traditional Nickel with a 4 man front like we do.

These can be considered their current "starters"

NT: #97 Branch
DT: #90 Brown
DE: #97 Long, #93 Sheard, #98 Flowers

ILB: #54 Hightower
OLB: #53 Van Noy, #51 Mingo, #58 McClellin, #50 Nincovich

CB: #21 Butler, #26 Ryan, #25 Rowe
DB: #30 Harmon
FS: #32 McCourty
SS: #23 Chung
