I was just thinking about some of the new hires over the past few weeks, and realize that we may have gotten hurt by some of them in trying to find a new monster NT to groom behind/replace the 35 year old Jason Ferguson. I want to start out saying Fergi played great this year for us and was integral in our D stepping up, but he is both old, and not a true 3-4 NT (a bit too small although that sounds ridiculous.)
However, there have been 2 recent hires that may hurt our search in the draft. The first is Dom Capers to the Packers D-coordinator position. The Packers have the 10th selection in each round. They will undoubtebly be looking for a NT because there are none on thier roster on this point.
The second is Mike Nolan to the Broncos. He ran a 3-4 in SF. Drafting at # 14 each round. The Broncos have holes everywhere on D, but a NT would also be a priority for the scheme.
This is of course assuming each D coordinator institutes the 3-4 in the first year. This also means there will be more teams reaching for those prototypical 3-4 guys

Thoughts?

Very good point...

Raji will be gone...

We'll have to wait and see how things shake out that being said it also makes it that much more pertinent that Soliai gets his act together and becomes a beast at NT.

Not just talking Raji, who I would expect to be gone before our pick. Just bascially talking basic supply/demand. Every 3-4 player is now a hotter commodity now that more teams may run the 3-4. More teams will reach for these player they beleive to fit thier schemes. I just focused on what I see as the most important to a 3-4, the NT.

I would love to Soliai to become the monster he could be. But after his legal trouble I'm not sure I see this FO keeping him around. I like the no BS attitude this team has, and its hard to compromise it for a developmental player.

good point

also packers coach has stated the reason he went for capers was due to him running a 3-4 system. He stated he wanted this as its more deiff for an off co-ord to call plays against.

I think Raji is gone at 10 to GB. I was just thinking the other day how the 3-4 is now the flavour of the month for some, so I looked it up. There are now 9 teams just in the AFC that will be running it. Its going to make it harder in the future to find that specialized talent with so many teams now running. By my count there are 3 teams in the NFC as well. I think its kinda silly in GB, considering they are virtually starting from scratch. They are now calling Kampman an OLB? Reminds me of Roth somewhat, although hes much more athletic.

There is a misconception that your defensive end will be your linebacker if you were to go from a 4-3. This has been posted here and is wrong. At 6'4 he has a great height to be a 3-4 defensive end; however, he will have to gain at least 30 lbs in the offseason since the ideal weight of a 3-4 end should be at least 300 lbs at his height. Dom Capers is known to use his base package and thrown in a mix of packages to disbalance the offenses.

With so many teams turning to the 3-4 it will be imperative for our coaching staff to really do their homework and find the diamonds in the rough in the later rounds.

Thats the funny thing about NT's. All the big names seem to come from only the first two rounds.
Haynesworth, Ngata, Hampton, Wilfork-All drafted in Top 20
Jenkins, Rodgers- 44th and 61st overall respectively.

It seems as though in the NT postition, you get what you pay for as far as draft picks go.

? I merely passed along what I heard on sports radio the other day, that they want to stick Kampman at OLB. Im well aware of the ideal height/weight of 3-4 DE's, but ty anyway.

I actually thought Kris Jenkins was pretty dominant most of the year in the middle. His play slipped down the stretch, but so did the entire defense.

Sorry about that I guess I didn't make it clear. Those are who I list as the dominant NT's in the league (no specific order.) I meant that to get absolute quality you need to get one in the first 2 rounds.
It was in response to someone saying that we need to scout well to look for a NT in a late round.

My bad if I didn't make it clear.

Not every 3-4 are the same.parcells teams run a active 3-4 similar to what is run by chargers. bellichick runs a more zone based 3-4 where 2 gapping is more important then peneration.

so that needs to be considered a NT in bellichick scheme have to change to play in the charges, steelers system
