Some interesting analysis behind the awful numbers for Davenport.

“Davenport gave up the most sacks on the team with 11. This looks disastrous at first glance, and it is, it just was at the beginning of the season. Davenport played right tackle until week six against the Dallas Cowboys when he moved back to left tackle, a game Houston allowed only one sack. Davenport allowed five sacks as a right tackle in three weeks before being benched for Kendall Lamm. When he moved to left tackle he allowed only six sacks in twelve games. Of course he would have given up sacks if he played left tackle to start the season, but the right tackle experiment was the enormous reason for his horrendous play.”

Is this supposed to make us feel better? The fact that he gave up just as many sacks on the left side as he did on the right? Are you aware that Tunsil gave up 1 the entire season?

I mean the argument for Davenport is that if he starts you hope that it was more the situation than just him. Realistically he wont be a long term starter and more than likely depth. The bigger question is as a whole (not just LT) do we feel our OL is better than it was 3 days ago?

However, Davenport did finish 2018 strong, even if Houston faded down the stretch.
Davenport himself is an intriguing option if only because of his familiarity, as well as the way he finished 2018. The former fourth-rounder looks the part and even graded out as Pro Football Focus’ top LT of the Wild-Card round of the playoffs. But that was also against the Indianapolis Colts, whose greatest need coming into 2019 was pass rush. At the end of the day, barring a substantial leap in camp, he presents Houston with the safest, yet most unspectacular option on Watson’s blind side.

That is not the bigger question, as it is too short sighted. The bigger question is, does our future look better with the top draft picks we aquired. To me it is a resounding yes.

Methinks Grier/Flores believe Davenport may be a coach up possibility. He might not be, but it certainly did not hurt to make him part of the trade, while crossing their fingers that he is.

Yes, if you add in the fact that Tunsil was most likely going to cost this team almost 20 million a year...you essentially add 5 player (through the pay and draft picks) for 1. All we need is a good LT, not great, just good...and add some good interior guys and the team will be fine.

Perhaps try reading the whole article and my comment that it was “interesting.” He gave up only six sacks in the last 12 games which is far better than the pace he was on in the first part of the year. Also graded well in the playoff game.

This kid played fairly well at LT and was improving as the season went on.

I'm looking forward to seeing him out there. Seems to be our #1 option at LT game 1.

Tunsil was not credited with at least 3 sacks that occurred, so his "1 sack all year" stat is a little misleading. Look at the Vikings game last season. He let in at least 3 that game alone but the sacks were by like 4 people so they got credited to a different OLineman or not at all.

I love how people were like: "Tunsil is great, we wont trade him for a loser like Clowney"....then after we trade him and DONT get Clowney people are saying "He's a good not great OT" lol.

I love diehard optimism, there is more of it in this site than I expected.

I do hope they give Davenport a shot at LT...Sterup looked better than Sam Young last season, but not much better. We may set the sack record this season unless we create a new 1.5 second release offense.

(Shrugs) He may need some time to learn his new responsibilities on a new team. And maybe, like Rosen, Flores will want to give him time to be coached up in terms of technique. I would not be surprised if we don't see him before game 5.

Forget Tua, the guy doesnt seem to play well against top defenses. We need a franchise LT, not RT. Getting a 2021 1st and 2nd rounder from Texans means we are waiting until 2021 to get Lawrence. Until then, Rosen is our guy to see what he's made of. Next year we have so many picks to build up our OL, DE, and all that.

But look for the franchise LT, not RT.
