Too bad. I remember the original 63 yarder by Tom Dempsey and was hoping it wouldn't be broken. Although it was increasingly obvious that it would happen soon. I'm a bit surprised it lasted as long as it did, given the massive increase in successful 50+ yarders, and 8 games per year in Denver.
When Dempsey hit that kick it wasn't the national game. It was an obscure game. But the networks immediately cut to it and everyone was amazed. It was a massive, massive story. Nobody could believe anyone could make a kick of that length, or anything close to it. Prior to that kick Dempsey was famous for half a missing foot but he wasn't considered a particularly long or accurate kicker. Then he attained legendary status immediately.
