I heard today that the NFL will be using a "flexible schedule" for the last 7 weeks of the season. Meaning that any game in those last 7 weeks could be moved from Sunday afternoon to Sunday night. Does anyone know how they are going to do this w/ season ticket holders and all and how far in advance games will be moved to prime time?

I've wondered that myself. I don't see how they can reasonably expect people to simply change their personal schedules on a moments notice. I, for one, plan months in advanced for a game that I'm going to. However, I'm usually flying in from Colorado for the game.

I think when they announced it, they mentioned a 2 week lead time. I think given the market for tickets to great games, the league figures that forcing people to change plans or even sell tickets because they can't come is well worth what NBC was willing to pay for the Sunday Night package. I sure as hell know that as a fan who will hopefully fly in for games in Miami at some time in the future now that I'm heading back into the workforce, I don't mind having to make my plans flexible because it means I'll be getting a quality game every week those last 7 weeks.

If you're flying in, you're on notice that you'd better make arrangements to fly back out on Monday and have a hotel room booked.

I haven't gone through the link but does this mean just a time change or location change as well? :shakeno:

I would think it's just a time change. Too many variable involved in changing the venue.

I guess this answers the question afew days ago about how many prime time games are allowed per team....
To make the system more flexible, up to three teams each season will be allowed a bonus sixth prime-time appearance. All the others will be limited to a maximum of five, including the Monday night ESPN package and the late-season Saturday or Thursday games on NFL Network.

Yeah, it's just a time change. Instead of your 1 or 4 PM start, it will be probably an 8:30 start.

People, people. The schedule change has NOTHING to do with the fans or players and EVERYTHING to do with their contract with NBC. Remember that it is a schedule change EXCLUSIVELY with the best interest of the network in mind. How do you think coaches or players like it knowing that they might have to change their Sunday at 1pm on local TV game to Sunday at 8:30 on a national stage? Probably not too much. As far as fans planning ahead of time and all that, well, I'm sure that didn't even cross the league's mind. I am also one of those that buys tickets months ahead of time and have my itinerary set out at least two months ahead of time (work and the lady friend demand it). So, it sucks for us. But hey, those billions of dollars that NBC paid for their contract are well worth it to the NFL, even if it means a few thousand unhappy fans...

They absolutely did think of the fans................there were talks of doing this w/ MNF for years, but they never did it because switching a Sunday night game to the next day would have screwed things up too much for the fans attending. I'm not discounting that other factors weren't given much more weight....but the fact that they did it to Sunday night, when they never would Monday night, shows some consideration for the fans.

In the end, we're talking about a 7.5 hour maximum difference in kickoff time. With 12 days notice........for what will be a great game, I don't think that too many fans are going to be put into that bad of a bind. I have flown in for games, and while it would take some extra thought in your planning (I would be sure not to plan to leave Sunday if I go to any of the games during this time), if you are aware of the possibilities this far in advance......it shouldn't be much of a hardship at all.

This isn't the greedy NFL and NBC *******s -- the league is acting in the interests of its fans here, and that does happen to mean NBC will make more money and therefore will pay more for the right to make that money.

I do not want to watch a crappy Dallas vs. Washington national game of the week in prime time when both teams are 4-7 and fighting for last place in the NFC East. I want to see a quality game. You have to remember that the fans at the stadium are a drop in the bucket of all fans. Most fans watch most of their games on TV, and the NFL has an obligation to serve that market.

What's the big deal...ESPN has been doing this for years.

How so?

The Sunday Night games weren't ever handled like this before.

It is true that games could be moved from 1 to 4 in prior years.
