Raider Barret Robbins Bipolar episode that left him giddy in a high state and not cognizant of elapsed time and short term memory in the biggest sports stage, it was especially disheartening on more than level for many involved with or who follow the sport.

In addition to the disappointment many of his team's fans felt for the game outcome was the realization that others who go through depression/anxiety disorders without the same level of scrutiny often find simialr results even when they are in near ideal circumstances. Reaching unexplainable lows at times of high expectations is not an uncommon reaction for those who feel/deal with such.

Another NFL player met those same expectations after a journey almost equally as strange. Doplhins star RB and MVP candidate Ricky Williams encountered similar, though not as severe emotional circumstances and shared those experiences in an article that hopefully can be a good staring point/reference for Mr.Robbins.

``If somebody breaks a leg, they're given pain pills, anti-inflammatories and they're rehabbed,'' said Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams, who overcame depression and became the NFL's top rusher last season. ``But if someone has a mental health problem, they're just supposed to get over it. That's not fair.''

Approximately 16 percent of the U.S. adult population will have major depression at some time in their life, according to a recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Also, a 2001 U.S. Surgeon General report found nearly 8 percent of all Americans suffer from brain chemistry abnormalities such as bipolar disorder.

While a few in the sports world -- such as Williams and Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw -- have spoken out recently, mental illness remains a highly stigmatized topic, particularly within the jock culture.

Bradshaw recently lost long time teammate Mike Webster, who also played center. Webster battled depression/mental illness as well, though not mentioned in this article this fan believes it was in his stead mostly Bradshaw spoke aside from perhaps personal issues he had as well. The author isnt clear in that regard.

Anyways this fan finds it interesting some of the best to have ever played are stepping out to discuss this matter from personal perspectives out of care and leadership for others who deal with the problem. From seeing comment on this and other boards a lot of the sport's fans know/deal with this on some level or aspect.

Ricky Williams especially seems to show tremmendous maturity in this regard and it really sheds a new light on him as well and it makes his story of success in Miami even more impressive. Hopefully this article helps others in Finheaven or at least shows that your biggest star is on solid ground and is like all of us in some ways.

:pirate: From gold to sorrow and back. Looking forward to great camp and season good luck !
