New Roughing The Passer Rule

This is the dumbest thing that the NFL has dug its feet in on, and that's saying a lot. It fails every test that something is supposed to pass before becoming a rule. First, there's the obvious definitional problem that others have talked about. Second, even if the rule itself were clear, it's pretty much impossible for the refs to call it in any consistent way. It's a split second judgment decision where the ref has to determine things like avoidability and intent. You really can't blame them for screwing it up. Third, it won't protect any quarterback from getting hurt. A pass rusher cannot change his instinct to hit the quarterback as hard as he can, since he's going at full speed anyway to try and get through blockers. So some quarterback this year is probably going to break his collarbone, and there may or may not be flag on the play.

Other players who are very valuable themselves get hurt all the time. They've done a lot to protect the quarterback. At some point, just accept the fact that it's a violent game and even Aaron Rodgers is going to get hurt.

The irony is the team being hurt thr most is the Packers who also were the most vocal in getting more qb protection
