Best time to go for 2 is early. High risk high reward. You have enough game time left to recover if you miss.same goes for early onside kicks.

That scheme has been generating great rushing attacks on a budget since at least the 1990's, and it's also done that while asking less of the linemen too. San Fran actually has a better line than most running the scheme, but look at the running game we've had for two years with bottom caliber linemen in place.
