So granted I'm a little biased, but I do have insight to Beck and his abilities as I'm an avid BYU fan and former critic, following his every move from Frosh to Senior.
Beck started off at BYU as the second coming of Detmer, but with a cannon arm (detmer was a great college QB, but his arm was wanting - not so with Beck). That was chat board banter BTW.
In reality, his first three plays were fumble, sack, and interception (byu recovered). Followed later by a head on collision with a USC linebacker ending in a Knocked out cold concussion. No joke. Showed lotsa guts, you have to give the guy that.
So, BYU has a proud, high expectation QB tradition. QBs get absolutely demantled when they underperform (not proud of this fact, but it shows what JB had to go through to win our loyalty and admiration). JB underwent severe and unforgiving analysis and scrutiny the whole time at BYU. Everyone recognized that he had all the tools. But there was great debate on whether he had the "it" factor. The truth is he went through probably the worst period of BYU football ever - and beat it.
In order to understand JB, you need to understand his history.
He was thrown into the starter position as a true frosh after returning from a 2-year mission in a foreign country (recipe for demolishing confidence BTW) by Gary Crowton - good OC (now at LSU), horrible HC. JB was lucky to survive - two other NFL potential QBS did not.
The things that made JB survive are simple. He was coachable, he has the tools, and he has an almost insane desire to win.
So when the new coaching regime came in, during his Junior year, and implemented a whole new system, JB was in full support of his new coaches and new system even when we fans were bashing them all.
He showed glimpses of greatness, but many of us were sceptical, wondering if he had "it." Truth is he didn't have it as a frosh, soph, jun.
Not until his senior year, that is. Early in the year, we were wondering if he had the "it" factor. Then, JB got hurt and sat out a game. He studied from the sideline and saw what he needed to be. He came back in, and critics were hushed - I was one of his worst. IMO at the time, he had talent, but lacked the ability to "will out a win." I was wrong. It was obvious something in JB had clicked. The rest is history.
JB has had as much potential and talent as any BYU QB. He did not have the stable system that Steve Young, Jim McMahon, and Ty Detmer had. He worked through the worst time the BYU program has had in 30 years, and lead the team to the conference championship, and a total and complete buttwhipping in the Las Vegas bowl against the arrogant and bad smelling Oregon Ducks, may they rott in their brand new Nikes. The bowl game wasn't even close. JB lead the team, and since he was the ONLY drafted cougar, it was clear who dismantled the Ducks.
The bottom line on John Beck is that he is extremely talented. He can make every throw. However, the key is he learned to expect to win in his senior year at BYU. I expect you will see him continue to expect wins. He is not the type that is just glad to be a Dolphin - I guarantee he is setting his sights on the superbowl and will give everything he has to get there. And once he's there, he will want to win it more than anyone.
