For the second straight year, The Great American Race came down to the last lap. This time the drama rewarded Ryan Newman, who hadn't won in 81 races over more than two years, and team owner Roger Penske, long the king at Indianapolis but never a winner at Daytona.
Newman waited while the big stars fell back one by one. Then, with only Tony Stewart ahead of him, Newman got a ``push from heaven'' from teammate Kurt Busch to take the lead on the final lap.

All in all it was a pretty good race. I was pretty sick of seeing all those darn toyota's up front, it was GREAT to see a Dodge get the win at the 500 again, especially since it was the one being driven by Ryan Newman. Newman has has such awful luck on the plate tracks, and pretty awful luck the last couple of years. He was showing some good signs of getting back on track near the end of last season, and what a way to get back on track and back to victory lane... by winning your first Daytona 500.

Not a fan of newman, nor do i hate him. But he has the potential to do so much better than he has recently, so Good for Ryan Newman i say!!!

Was much happier to see Newman win than either of the Busch brothers, but was really hoping that Sorenson was going to pull it out. It was kinda boring in the middle, but turned out to be a really good race.

I was surprised with sorenson as well. he ran well through speedweeks and really performed well today too. Great showing for him, especially since he's probably getting the leftovers when it comes to equipment and such over at Ganassi with montoya and franchitti there. so good for him.

I was also pretty impressed with Hornish Jr. ran well, stayed out of trouble and got some valuable experience out there. Too bad Carpentier didnt make the show, because he was pretty impressive to me in the 150 on thursday till he cut that tire down.

Good race in the end, but I want to complain about Fox coverage. I think they were in commercial for the first three caution flags but my gripe with them was their coverage down the stretch. Something good was happening at the front and they'd be panning thru the entire field or showing a bumper cam. Come on guys, it's one thing to do this for the first 250 miles, but when it comes down to crunch time show the damn race. the last lap they even had split screen! Give me a break... whoever is running their control room should be fired... okay end of rant... lol... congrats to Newman, one of the good guys, well deserved.

:hi5:I didn't want to see the front of Newman's car in a split screen (bumper cam) while he and Stewart were getting ready to battle it out.

i thought it was a pretty good race, i agree it was boring in the middle, but it started getting really good with 50 laps to go

congrats to newman he did a great job on that last lap

I cant believe i forgot to rant about that myself. their coverage in the last few laps as you mentioned was terrible! While newman and stewart were battling that splitscreen with the battle itself in the small screen on the corner was ridiculous. also I was sick and tired of that stupid gopher cam... as the race wore on it ended up that the camera was showing more asphalt than racing.. couldnt agree more though, their coverage was terrible... and waltrip and mcreynolds... AND hammond... need to go... theyre just awful to listen to i think.

man i rarely watch nascar and i turned that race on with like 60 laps to go and man that was awesome to watch and see

It was nice to see Kurt Busch finish second to his team mate. I though he was going to make the pass on the left right at the end.

Awesome day for Penske.

Big fan of Ryan Newman's and all I got to say is way to go Ryan!!!
How about Kurt Busch giving Newman a much needed push across the finishline...you can bet Kurt enjoyed sticking it to Tony Stewart after their run in earlier in the week. lol
I wonder if shrub, A.K.A. Kyle Bush laid back for his brother and hung poor ol' Tony out to dry. lol

That was a close finish, now I have NASCAR fever and want to go to a race this summer...either Pocono or Richmond.:D

do it man. Its great. you don't really get a sense for the speed that those guys are driving at, and how close they are to one another unless youre there in person! if i were you, id choose richmond!! a fast short track, under the lights beats the long boring huge disaster that is pocono!

The ONLY way to go to a race is to camp out before the race. I agree that you don't appreciate how fast they go until you see them live, but anymore I go for the party not the race :beer1::woot:

I go to Charlotte once or twice a year, looking to go to Dega or Richmond this year as well.

Congratz to Newman, happy for him and his team. Amazing how the Dodges showed up at the end. Too bad Kyle couldn't pull it off, he had the fastest car the entire day.

I was really disappointed but what do you really expect from a Smoke fan? I hate you Kurt Busch!!! Great race though. It looks like the Toyotas are ready to race this year though.
