NEWSFLASH: Coaches Don't Matter!!

Bad head coaches who won a Superbowl:

Weeb Ewbank
Don McCafferty
Mike Ditka
George Seifert
Barry Switzer
Brian Billick

All these guys won a SB, but failed hard afterward. Heck, Seifert eventually went nearly WINLESS with the Panthers...

A case could even be made for Jon Gruden.
How can you say on the one hand that coaches don't matter, and then on the other hand call someone a "bad" coach?

If coaches didn't matter, you'd have no way of knowing who was good and bad. You'd have only "neutral" coaches who either had good quarterbacks or did not.

Coaches only matter if you are looking to start a dynasty. Those are the coaches that really "matter." However, those are few and far between. The rest are all "good enough", which is all you really need in order to win a ring, IF you have an elite QB.

Why would I not be looking to start a dynasty?

Coaching DOES make a difference. Yes having an elite QB does help, but good coaching can mask a team's flaws. Ever notice how some players will be an all-pro in one system but crap in another? I'm not just talking about offensive players who can be made to look better by QBs, but the defensive players that leave.

Sparano came here with the reputation of a good motivator. Now those types of coaches can win, but if things get poor, motivational speeches can only go so far. YOu need somebody who can motivate AND outsmart the other coach. Tony is not that type of guy

Why would I not be looking to start a dynasty?

Ideally, we would, but they are so rare (more rare than elite QBs) that the chances we will find both in one shot are not likely. As such, our full effort should be on finding our elite QB.

I think you try to find an elite QB either way. Might as well find a coach who can lead a dynasty at the same time.

I think you have this coach/quarterback thing framed in your mind as an "either-or" when it's really a "both."

Coaching is critically important. You're listening to too much Lebatard. Caldwell is a bad coach who was handed the job by a superior coach. A well coached team can sustain that quality under a caretaker for a year or so but the bottom will inevitably drop out.
