Ever since the clock struck midnight on the Dolphins' fairy-tale season, many fans have been eagerly anticipating the next meaningful midnight strike, which finally arrives tonight. That's when NFL teams are allowed to start shopping for free agents.

Those free agents are far more expensive than slippers, even the $1.6 million ruby ones at Harrods in London. Plus, they rarely fit as well as what the teams already have on their feet. That makes this the most overrated of all NFL events, and one that correlates little with the far more significant event that the NFL holds in every early February. Simply, franchises that participate actively in the free-agent period rarely participate in Super Bowls.

True to a degree, but many teams get that missing piece through free agency. Reggie White certainly put the Packers on top. The Cowboys and 49ers of the 90's basically traded Superstars through free agency, even though they had many core players from their drafts. It's hard to believe the Giants would have won the Super Bowl without having Plaxico Burress. All of those teams drafted very well too, but you often need some quality free agents.

Of course we are. Sparano wants to win now especially after last season. However, he has repeatedly said their philosophy is to build the team through the draft. The draft is their biggest tool to build a championship. The FA signings will compliment their draft picks and vice versa.

I wish more people got this concept.

I hope that when our final roster is settled in September, more of the players have been drafted than those that had been on the roster last September. Continuity is the key.

The 2007 Patriots proved that no matter how much talent you take from free agency, it still can't replace a team built through the draft. The Steelers, the Colts, and the Giants are almost entirely stocked of players drafted.

I agree with building through the draft, but striking gold in FA is like a do-over for a previously bumbled draft pick. A safety net, if you will. Any smart acquisition in FA saves a draft pick for another position come April.

This is exactly why the front office has re-signed all 3 of what i consider the most "major" free agents, Carey, Crowder, and Bell. we may add one or two impact players through free agency that will help us win. Look at the patriots, they build through the draft but they have added lots of players. Rodney Harrison, Adalius Thomas, Rosavelt Colvin, Randy Moss, i dont even want to mention wes welker.

yea but we need to win now

Doesnt matter ... we need to have multiple shots at winning not just spend spend spend for 1 year. I mean i still want jason brown but after that, thats it. We'll draft a NT, LBs and CB... its ok to sign one free agent here and there but i dont want to make the same mistake other teams have. So its either Jason Brown, (and i dont want to overpay) or nothing else on free agency unless its fill ins.
