I was looking around at past awards today and trying to think of who should win them this year……well one that I cam e across which doesn’t appear to have a clear cut winner, is Comeback Player of the Year.
I figured I’d take a look at our roster and see it there was anyone who might fit that description…..and I came up with Lance Schulters. He was injured most of last year, playing only 3 games…..but this year he’s got 79 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 ints & 1 forced fumble. Very respectable stats, similar to what he was putting up prior to last year when he was considered one of the leagues better safeties.
So then I ask the question, if not Schulters, then who?? The 2 players who come to mind who are greatly improved from last year are Kyle Vandenbosh (sp?) (12 ½ sacks) and Derrick Burgess (14 sacks)….but they were never good before so does the term “comeback player†really apply to them? I say no….but remember that last year’s winner was Drew Brees….who was widely considered a bust before last year.
Other solid contenders who come to mind are Aquan Boldin, Ty Law and Santana Moss. I say these three have the name recognition which the NFL likes to have with this award….but I don’t know that any of them are necessarily more deserving than Schulters.
