for those of you still confused about what this means...basically its states there will not be a draft after the 2009-2010 season.Which leads to there will be an extended FA period.

the reason they are doing this is mainly because the NFL owners of today are tired of spending an outrageous amount of money to players, especially players who dont deserve it.

EDIT:Enjoy the draft for the next 2 seasons everyone.....because it will be the last...

Still really early to assume there won't be a draft. The NFL makes money off the draft, therefore this will be resolved by then.

However, something does need to be done about the players holding out and what not. Not having a draft would only lead to players getting paid more IMO.

The top several picks of the draft would get a lot less money probably, but the rest of the draft would get so much more.

Actually i read (somewhere this week) the owners are meeting this month to discuss a new deal. the owners seem to want to get a jump on this and end any future problems

Not having a draft would be rediculous. They need to just figure out a way to make rookie salary's/contracts already preset. #1 pick makes ________, #2________ whatever the # is the player will already know what he's going to make at each possible position before he even gets drafted.

If there is not a draft after the 09-10 season, then so be it. The owners have to do something before the salaries bankrupt the league. I liked Jake Long but there is no way he should be making more money than anyother lineman in the league. He should earn his stripes and then get paid. It is getting out of control. Plus, with the way our economy is going, most Americans won't be able to go to the games which will reduce the revenue the teams make which will make it harder to pay not just the players...but staff and all office personel.

I would like to see this too, but I don't think there is a chance of it happening. I am not sure what happened to the rookie salary allocation they had a few years ago, but that seemed to help. There was a formula based upon where you drafted and how many draft choices you had that figured your rookie cap. It at least gave teams some leverage with high picks becuase a team could not spend the whole rookie cap on one guy.

Getting back to your point though Outlaw; I am not a labor attorney, but I think the NFL pre setting the exact amount the draft pick can make is not a legal labor practice and falls into all that anti trust/collusion area they are always screaming about.

Total over reaction to the article. They may opt out, big deal. All that it means is the owners want to renegotiate. If they don't get the rookie salaries under control in relation to the veteran players then the league is in for a train wreck.

None of this is good for the players union either. Veteran players are getting thrown under the bus because they cant be fitted under the salary cap with the rookies who have never played a down.

We might see a lock out or a strike in a couple of years but don't believe for one second that this league is going to move forward without a salary cap or draft.

If I have said it before, I will say it again, this is just absolutely ridiculous. The owners think they are paying the players too much and the players don't think they are getting paid enough. Add to that the fact that the Bob Krafts of the world don't get along with the Bill Bidwells of the world. They are not playing with fire here, they are playing with playing with nukes . . . and it looks like the big red button could be hit Tuesday.

Why wouldn't it be legal??? You see all the time in regular jobs where the salary is predetermined. As for the first part of your post you're right they do have that rookie salary allocation crap but it is just that..... Crap. All it does is determine how much a team can spend on rookies that year. So teams can just pay that rookie a low amount their first year then make up the rest of it throughout the length of the contract, that's why/how Jake Long is making less than 1 Mil. this year but signed a contract that averages 11 mil per season.

it's been known for a long time that the owners are going to opt out, and what the reprocussions would be. the only 'news' is that they may do it on May 20.

This same disaster was going to happen in 2006 too......until everyone involved remembered that they like money and got something done.

The NFL and its players union have started talks aimed at negotiating a possible extension to the sport's labor contract, which expires in 2011.
Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players Association, said on the union's Web site representatives from both sides met Thursday in New York.

I would take the owners side in this. I know the owners are billionaires but I think players are getting too much power.

I love football and I wouldn't care if the NFL owners went with replacement players. The NFL wouldn't lose a penny if they had to use replacement players.

Sure, there are player payment issues, but rest assured the NFL will continue to have a draft. As I see it, this is one of many bargaining chips we will see thrown on the table until the owners and players can agree to some serious changes to their bargaining agreement. The NFLPA is always against lowering player salaries or restricting their movement options. The owners are against paying for players who aren't there and overpaying for rookies. But both sides want a draft because it makes the NFL earn more total money.

There will continue to be a salary cap in some form or fashion. There will continue to be a draft. There will continue to be a season. The owners and players are just doing a lot of posturing.

Finally. Start treating it more like other industries where you can actually get a deeper look at potential players. I love the idea of seeing players actually applying for the job vs drafting them.

Wouldn't unrestricted fee agency lead to bidding wars and guys getting paid even more than they are making now??? :rolleyes2:
