POWAY – Chargers linebacker Steve Foley was shot near his home early Sunday morning following a traffic stop by an off-duty city of Coronado police officer.
Foley's injuries are not believed to be life threatening, said sheriff's homicide Lt. Dennis Brugos. The shooting occured on Travertine Court. The Chargers issued a statement confirming the incident: “We have confirmed that linebacker Steve Foley was shot early this morning. We'll try to provide more information as it becomes available. Right now all of our thoughts are with Steve.”

About 3:30 a.m., the off-duty officer started following a suspected drunk driver in the area of northbound Highway 163 and Highway 52, Brugos said. The vehicle was described as weaving and its speed ranged from 30 to 90 mph and nearly hit several vehicles, he said.
After stopping at a red light, the off-duty officer pulled beside Foley, identified himself as a police officer, and ordered him to pull over, but Foley drove away, Brugos said. Foley stopped again, and got out of his car, approaching the officer, according to police. The officer again identified himself, pulled out a gun, and ordered the suspect several times to stop, Brugos said.
“However he continued to walk toward the officer, making the statement, 'That's a bb gun',” Brugos said.
Foley then got back into his car and the off-duty officer followed him to a cul-de-sac in Poway, where Foley lives.
Foley got out of the car and started walking toward the officer, while his female passenger drove the car alongside him, Brugos said. The officer identified himself again and then fired a warning shot into the bushes, Brugos said. Brugos said the female then revved the engine and drove directly at the officer, by then out of his car; the officer fired two shots at Foley's vehicle. The officer was not hit by the car.
Foley reached into his pants with his right hand as he approached the officer and the officer fired at the suspect. Foley acknowledged he'd been shot, Brugos said, but continued to move toward the officer, who fired again. Foley then fell to the ground.
Foley was taken to a hospital and the female passenger was taken to the Poway sheriff's station for questioning.
No charges have been filed, Brugos said.
He said it was unclear whether Foley was armed.
The Coronado Police Department referred questions to the Sheriff's Department.
Foley has had previous run-ins with law enforcement. Last week, the San Diego County District Attorney's office said it would not pursue charges against Foley for an incident in April. He was accused of resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and being drunk in public after an altercation on a University City street about 1:30 a.m. April 21. Foley signed with the Chargers as a free agent before the 2004 season, starting 13 games last season and missing three games with an abdominal injury. He tied for third on the team with 4½ sacks.

Doesn't sound like Foley was doing anything to warrant being shot. Sounds like he was intoxicated and therefore confused and the officer starts shooting at him. Hopefully this officer loses his job and gets put away for 20 years.

If i was a cop...and repeatedly warned his guy...and if a big *** football player kept walking towards me....i would have done EXACTLY what he did. He gave him fair warning, hell, he even shot off a warning shot. I can't blame the officer at all...actually, i wanna shake his hand.

I know this guy is a bad dude but it was strange why this cop was following him. If your not familiar with the area but Coronado is like if a Homestead cop was following a guy on south beach. Why didnt the off duty cop just call 911 or the sheriff.

I don't really post anymore, for the most part I've found it pointless. But in this case, I couldn't help myself. Did you even read the whole article? First, the girl started driving at the cop with a car. Just an FYI, getting hit with a car IS life threating.pwn3dyo said:
2nd, Foley REACHED INTO HIS POCKET and walked towards the cop after countinuous warnings. Thats two threats to the cops life, what do you expect him to do, just sit there? Its not like the officer shot him in the head or the heart, he shot a non-lethal shot.
Football players are not gods. They are not above the law. If it was a normal person, I don't think many people would question the cops actions. But when the person is famous, everyone wants to "fry the S.O.B."

The report says she started driving at him after he fired a shot in the bushes. Then he fired at the car, then at Foley twice. Attempting to kill him. The cop will get screwed if this is the whole story. Dont worry. Remember, he was off duty, therefore had a normal car and normal clothes.

Foley has a history of resisting arrest. Shouldn't surprise anyone that he did it again.

I'm assuming he did NOT have a firearm, and there was no other major details left out. Anyone can pretend to be an offduty cop, and it is actually a common scam by violent sick criminals. Foley obviously assumed he wasn't not a cop. That's why he assumed he had a BB Gun. I wouldn't comply with a suspicious person that claimed to be a police officer myself. The LEO should of got an on-duty officer to handle it. If he was on duty and had his stun gun, this all would of been different.

So, back in April when it was "On Duty cops" was he assuming it was guys from a halloween party? I would say that the fact two incidents like this happen this close together paints a pretty bad picture for Foley.
I do question why other cops didnt at some time get involved. It sounds like it did go on for awhile. Surely the off-duty would have had time to make a cell-call?
