There are threads regarding to Henne refused to throw the ball away and take a sack.

I personally know a couple retired nfl assistant coaches...and here what they told me.

Better passing percentage, higher qb rating = more money at contract negotiation, sack....linemen problem, not mind.

For D linemen and LB, sack, tackle for lost = espn highlight, more name recognition, better stats = bigger contract....guessing snap count, off side.....who care, espn does not show those.

For O coordinator, shutting down after a lead...well, I done my job, got a lead, no need to take more chances. Now its up to the defense to hold on. Defense can not protect the lead, ain't my problem, I covered my a $ $.

I am not saying thats what happened with Henne. But these situations exist in NFL more often than you think.

Henne has 3 years left on his current contract before he sees a new contract.. And if Henne doesn't do what the coaches ask he won't be starting.

Can't get much of a contract when you don't even start.

So much for that philosophy.

Henne has always had the knock on him that he tends to hold the ball to long. If you go back and look at his NFL combine analysis one of the big problems all of the analysts pointed out is that he holds the ball to long and takes to many sacks. I would tend to argue that he is holding the ball to long while trying to make a play, not that he is worried about his contract 3 years down the road. This is something that Sparano has addressed and I am sure they are working on with him.

Is the reason they are retired because they had that philosophy?

I don’t think the Pat, Colts, Saints, Minnesota, Stealers and the rest of the top ten offenses and defenses in the league subscribe to that theory.

OK, this is why your "nfl assistant coach" friends are RETIRED....

Players don't get contracts based solely on stats and numbers rofl.. before any team signs them they review game tape on the player to make sure he is what they think he is... You don't just blindly trust the stats rofl who on earth would do that???

Wait I came up with an exception.. the Raiders owned by the crazy old man who blindly trusts numbers when it comes to drafting =(

and look how they've been doing the past 5 years =(

I don't doubt that there is some truth to this, but no way that is what is effecting Henne.

Now a veteran in a contract year? Maybe. These guys are human you know, and (shocker!) likely do sometimes put themselves and thier numbers / future contract status ahead of the team.

John has a long mustache, repeat John has a long mustache. The bird has left the cage, repeat the bird has left the cage.

These are nfl players we are talking about, rights?
The ones that never beat up their girl friends, the ones that never got into fights at strip clubs.

And I am sure your co-workers are all honest and no one is selfish.

NFL players are humans too.

Those selfish players are minority, but they are more than you think.

That's an interesting point, and I would imagine some truth to it in general- I kind of doubt it more when it comes to Henne. He seems more of like the Dudley Do Right type, meaning honest, straight shooter, team first guy. But your scenario reminds me of an episode of Scrubs- female surgeon passes on an operation that could have saved someone's life because if the surgery failed it would have negativley skewed her success ratio. If I recall correctly it was referred to as a dirty little secret in the surgical world.

Thigpen. Or draft someone else. Henne doesn't have job security like that. Keep taking 5 or 6 sacks like he has twice now, and he won't have a job for now.

Thigpen, are you kidding.
I take Henne with 5 sacks a game over Thigpen anyday.

When it come to drafting a qb, no sure thing, did the name John Beck ring a bell.

keep leading go-ahead drives and winning games, and job security wont be a problem.

seriously, what more do people expect from this guy after 4 starts?
