NFL playoff picture: Dolphins rise despite shutout in Buffalo

Because us, Baltimore and San Diego are all tied at 8-7. We win a 3-way tie.

That's right. Good point.

Miami has the better conference record.

And that only matters right now b/c of San Diego winning today. Understood now.

How the Dolphins make the playoffs:

1.) Dolphins beat the Jets. Ravens lose to the Bengals. Miami gets in with the better record (9-7 over 8-8).

2.) Dolphins beat the Jets. Ravens beat the Bengals. Chargers beat the Chiefs. Dolphins get in through a 3 way tie (9-7) because of better conference record.

How the Dolphins don't make the playoffs:

1.) Dolphins lose to the Jets. Ravens beat the Bengals. Chargers lose to the Chiefs. Ravens get in because they beat Miami earlier in the year.

2.) Dolphins lose to the Jets. Ravens lose to the Bengals. Chargers lose to the Chiefs. Steelers beat the Browns. The Steelers win the 5 way tie breaker and NY finishes higher than Miami in the standings and eliminates them (Jets would be 3-3 in the division and Miami would be 2-4). That makes it a 3 way tie between the Jets, Steelers, and Chargers because the Steelers would have a better division record than the Ravens. They win the 3 way tie breaker over the Chargers and Jets because they would have a better conference record.

3.) Dolphins lose to the Jets. Ravens lose to the Bengals. Chargers lose to the Chiefs. Steelers lose to the Browns. The Steelers would finish at 7-9. The Ravens get in because the Jets would finish higher than the Dolphins and have the tie breaker over them. It would make that a 3 way tie between the Jets, Ravens, and Chargers, where Baltimore has the better conference record between the 3.

Basically, if Miami loses to the Jets they are eliminated. There is no scenario to get in at 8-8.

Dungy just said he likes us as the 6 seed because we need the least amount of help. I still can't believe after todays dreadful game we moved up and are in the best position to get it.

The only rise the Dolphins are seeing is the Leprechaun boner caused by the media crapping all these rainbows.

All bets are off once u get in the tournament; Giants in 07 and 11, Ravens last year, Green Bay, Pitt all teams that snuck in the wildcard despite looking legitimately ****ty in the regular season only to make a Super Bowl run people didn't expect. If u call yourself a fan u should want the playoffs no matter how u get in

im hoping cincy doesn't sit starters. they are playing for one home game, so who knows

The Bengals aren't going to sit starters. If they win and Pats lose the Bengals get not only a home game, but a first-round bye. The Bengals and Pats games are at the same time so it's not like they can sit around and wait to find out if it's possible.

There will be many people that will say we don't deserve to make the playoffs (and we honestly don't if we play like we did today come wild card weekend).

But keep in mind if we do make it we will be playing a team that we already beat this year (Colts, Bengals, or Patriots).

For the umpteenth time this year, it's ours for the taking. Gotta come out guns blazing Sunday.
we lost a few games by a few points so I still believe we are playoff worthy

Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger.

Also dont forget the Cards made it to the SB as a 9-7 team and lost to the Steelers that one year. But, again...... Kurt Warner.

They won't man. They do not want the Ravens to make the playoffs. Think of it this way. Week 17 the Dolphins in the 3rd seed and if we lose to the Jets they make the 6th seed would we sit starters? They are rivals.

The Bengals have literally no reason to sit starters beyond actively wanting the Ravens to make the playoffs.

Why do people keep acting like Cinci has nothing to play for? For ****'s sake, the #2 seed is on the line and if they win they are guaranteed to at least play the 6 seed instead of KC.

Just take care of the Jets and hope for a Bengals or Chargers victory. And if we do manage to get in, who knows what could happen. The Jets almost made it to the SB with Mark S anchez at QB. Anything can happen once you're in the playoffs, so why not want your team to make it?

In simplest terms, we need to win. Period. If we win and Chargers win, we are in. Ravens and Bengals will only affect who we play in the playoffs. So just pray for a win by us and the Chargers.
But if KC wins, we need Cincy to win.

Most posts ignore the scenario of we win, ravens win, chargers lose. We would be knocked out.

Unfortunately I have a sick feeling that might be the way it goes. I know the bunglers are tough at home but the ravens just simply refuse to die. And the Chargers are on the road.
