I have always thought that the NFL was (by far) the best officiated sporting league in the World. Certainly compared to international soccer, where matches routinely turn on terrible calls and the response is always to claim the referee was correct. In almost all cases, the NFL was good at immediately admitting mistakes and trying to rectify them. Blown calls, where they did happen, were pretty much always 'just one of those things' and you could often see how the mistake was made in good faith.
This has changed recently, and I believe Goodell is responsible. Firstly, as has been pointed out many a time, although the rules on holding have not changed someone has told the officials to ignore it in the presumed goal of allowing QBs to break passing records every other week. As a result, many absolutely blatant calls are going uncalled and far more than could be accounted for by claiming that they were missed. The result has been totally inconsistent enforcement which is little better than a farce.
The other problem is the new rules on safety. NFL rules always used to be enforced with a general degree of wisdom. However, the moment you start putting in place these ABSOLUTE rules (e.g. no contact to the helmet, no contact with receivers) you end up with stupid results. This is an error borrowed from soccer - if you say that any physical contact with an opponent can constitute a sending off, players spend their whole time playing up to the rules to try and manipulate the officials. This trend has now hit the NFL - make a huge fuss of totally incidental contact knowing that under the absolute rules in place you will get to draw a flag. Not surprisingly, players play up most on critical downs.
I have never believed the NFL is actually rigged, although the recent weeks have tested this faith a bit. But the standards are dropping because referees are being made to turn off their brains and judgement in the name of Roger's dream of Arena style, no-litigation football. To say that contact to the head of a QB is ALWAYS a penalty is just stupid, unnecessary and will result is horrible game changing calls being made. Saying that the passing game must always be favoured in every possible call will lead the same way.
At the very least, I would like to see calling for a flag to be thrown to be classed unsportsmanlike conduct. I am sick of seeing players wave their hand for a flag.
