So I have NFL rewind so today I dialed up the 2012 Dolphins week 6 (vs Rams at home) to compare it to what I witnessed from yesterdays game vs the Pack

My goals: To observe comparison of RT from his rookie year vs how he played yesterday
To observe comparison of defensive talent and tackling/ pass coverage vs how they played yesterday
To observe comparison of coaching decisions of Mike Sherman's playcalling vs yesterdays

I realize this is kind of apples and oranges because we played the Rams, but still

Here's what I found:
Ryan Tannehill played well, the pass blocking was decent (pre bullygate Richie and Martin) kept RT pretty safe. He made quick dump slant passes over the middle and was pretty effecient with it. That being said it didn't look like he was asked to do anything else, with the exception of a 30 yard TD pass to Marlon Moore. In this play he actually had time to recognize a mismatch downfield and lobbed a pretty nice TD to Moore. Where is this version of Tannehill?? He looked more confident, but again he was dinking and dunking those same slant passes and having success. It almost seems like he is comfortable being told exactly what to do (in Sherman's system) and is (now) having difficulty being creative and making plays out of nothing.

The defense overall was noticeably better in 2012. Our linebackers have taken a huge step back. Vs. the Rams, the Fins swarmed to tackle the passes thrown by Sam Bradford. Against the packers we were taking 3 or 4 missed tackles before bringing people down. The run defense I actually believe was better against the Packers, Steven Jackson ran crazy on the 2012 Fins. The pass defense was better in 2012 (except Jimmy Wilson was still there, why is this guy receiving a paycheck?) Yesterday they got schooled! Slip sliding all over the place, terrible. Our pass rush was exactly the same. Disruptive and great.

The coaching decisions. Well for all the hype we heard in the offseason about some wazoo Bill Lazor offensive schemes, we looked better under Sherman. Our offense was simple against the Rams, but it worked. Reggie Bush is missed, he was chewing up chunk yards off swing passes. The game in 2012 came down to the fourth quarter, we were barely leading with 4 minutes left...sound familiar????? On fourth and 2 with the ball on about the 50, we faked a punt form a direct snap and it worked! First down. We then stalled again, and with a 3rd and 5... we ran the ball again and punted! We gave the ball back to St Louis with 2 minutes left, and we would have lost the game if not for a missed field goal by St. Louis.

Overall this might as well be 2012. This Miami Dolphin team has been running in circles under the leadership of Philbin. This team is not better, not worse, just deficient in different areas.

Unless we get ten wins (we won't) Philbin is gone, possibly before the end of the year if things get ugly enough. Unfortunately IMO we will be 7-9 or 8-8 and the change will happen in the offseason. My 2 cents

I would say not really, we are more capable but in terms of our coach and our QB turning good play and favorable situations into wins, we've actually regressed if anything. Though we were pretty bad at sealing wins even then, as the early season Jets and Cardinals games are clear evidence to.

You're comparing a game against the rams to a game against the packers?

This is not what you would call an apples to apples comparison.

Great point. I do think our assitant coaching is better especially considering we have smurfs defensive backs and our linebacking corp is lacking. Seeing as we let Bush, Marshall, Vonte Davis, Dansby along with others walk away from the team because Philbin could either not coach them or fit his scheme has shown to be a mistake in the long run. Another reason not to rebuid but to reinvent the current roster with better leadership while holding onto the core players.

I realize this....that's why I stated it in my breakdown.

My point still holds true. This team is the same as it was. We are no different. New GM, New OC Coordinator, different players, doesn't seem to matter.

This is a better team, they just can't find any consistency. And philbin is just a terrible coach. I really believe we can hang with any team in the league. The pats and packers are lock playoff teams with all time great hall of fame qbs and we dominated both teams for large portions of the 2nd half. For some reason we can't score in the 1st half of games. At full strength I have no doubt this should be a playoff team, hopefully as we get all our guys back and tannehill plays a little better we can rattle off some W's.
