"It's no secret that the Philadelphia Eagles need help at wide receiver, and it appears they plan to address that issue by being aggressive in free agency.
Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ Advance Media reports the Eagles "are expected to make a push to sign" Miami Dolphins wideout Kenny Stills, should the pending free agent reach the open market.
Stills led Miami in touchdown grabs (nine) last season while posting the second-highest yards-per-catch average (17.3) of any NFL player with at least 40 receptions. The man he trailed? That would be Washington Redskins wideout DeSean Jackson, who has also been connected to Philly with free agency looming.
ESPN Eagles reporter Tim McManus pegged Stills as a potential target last month, noting that the 24-year-old would be a good fit as someone who can grow with quarterback Carson Wentz. McManus also pointed out on Tuesday that Stills could be seeking a significant chunk of change (a better deal than the Rams gave to Tavon Austin -- $10.5 million average per year, $28.5 million in guarantees) as one of the top receivers available.
That price tag could prevent Miami from keeping Stills in house, even though he has voiced an interest in staying. "I want to be back here," he said after the Dolphins were eliminated in the wild-card round. "I love this team. I love these guys. We did something special, just starting 1-4. So we’re going to do whatever we can to try to make it happen."
The interest appears to be mutual, but Miami has other factors to consider that should take precedence, like signing wideout Jarvis Landry to a long-term deal.
ESPN Dolphins reporter James Walker's take: Giving Landry an extension this offseason is a bigger priority. Landry led the team in receptions each of the past three seasons and is in the final year of his rookie deal. His extension won't come cheap. With that said, Dolphins VP Mike Tannenbaum and GM Chris Grier said their goal this offseason was keeping their own players after a 10-6 season. Stills is not the biggest key to that, but he does have importance. He is Miami's best deep threat. Landry works underneath the defense and DeVante Parker can do some of everything when healthy. Those three work well together."
