NFL Rumors: Miami Dolphins Rookie Jonathan Martin Could Start for O-Line

I find Samuda and McDonald's emergence more interesting than the fact Martin will start.

As confused as I was that a WR wasn't drafted in the spot that Martin was; the consolation prize was Miami got a potential 10 year starter at RT. With how bad the right side of the O-Line was in 2011, it's not like Martin wasn't needed.

So Long, Pouncey, and Martin look like locks to start? Incognito and maybe Steinback will finally make the O-line look great again....and it didn't take 4 years.....ahem Sporano.

If he does ok in the preseason and gets the nod to start, what will be key is what protection they will give him... will they leave a TE in? The kid will get beat from time to time, possibly even more so than Revolving Door last year, but he has the athletic ability and the smarts to learn and be good long term...

If this is the case it could be another reason why they may not start/play early.. Tanneyhill.

i hope the o line is malot better and they leave it a lone so they can gel tony kept messing with the o line they never did gel

Our O-line might be beastly for many years to come...Adding a quality Guard next year might be the cherry, but it´s not like with what we have, some quality O-LIne performance might not be in order, high expectations for this group of Nasties!!

I thought that's what we drafted him for, to start.............

As a 2nd rounder your expectations are that he will start IN TIME with development. If he DOES start in his first year, that's gravy (and further cudos to Ireland for getting the right guy at the right time).

Would be nice to hit it big on one of our highly drafted lineman. Looks like Jerry will be cut soon. If Martin pans out it puts us in nice shape at both Tackles and Center posn.
I agree. With jake Long, Mike Pouncey and Jonathon Martin we have the infrastructure to build a dominant O-line. Got a hunch that Tannehill has noticed this too. As time progresses, the Pouncey draft pick is looking smart, while many other teams were reaching for a QB.

i'd wait til he plays in the preseason and see how he fares before i'd crown him a week 1 starter...although to date the reports are encouraging...anyone see bobbie massie the rt for the cards yesterday 2nd string get destroyed by martell webster i think it was...zonas in trouble at tackle...

i only say the name massie cause i liked his value more later in the draft for a right tackle than i did martin so high given i figured martin was a year away and well i'd be wrong if what i saw from massie yesterday is what he has to offer...dreadful in pass pro

There's a reason Massie slipped so far in the draft and it was evident on film....he has horrible feet. That's why he played RT at Ole Miss in favor of Sowell on the left side. While a lot of people had a 2nd round grade on Massie i wasn't even looking at him any earlier than late 3/early 4 due to his pass pro problems....and that was only b/c we needed a RT.

On the flipside, Martin has really good feet and a great base against the bull rush (sits down well on his big butt). What he needs work on most is his strength and kick step.

massie looked more plug and play to me than martin...martin just looked like he was a year away strength wise...looks like i got that wrong...i'd want to punch a baby off what i saw from massie yesterday if i drafted him...anyways massie for me was a 3rd round value...plug and play right tackle...looks like i missed that boat...martell wilson wore him out yesterday

Make no mistake, Martin still needs to get stronger in the upper body. Starting at right tackle won't change that. Expect him to wear down during the season and hit the wall like most kids fresh out of college do. He's going to have to stick to those blocks longer in the NFL than he did in the PAC-10 and finish. It'll come in time if/as he gets his strength up.

Other than Miami not having much of an option than to start Martin, his athletic ability and feet are what will get him by on an island in vertical pass sets. You don't see many natural knee benders when looking at college lineman, although Martin was one of the most natural knee benders I saw. That gives a coach something to work with.

From what Martin has shown so far in camp and the possibility, he plays 10 years at that position; IMO Finally makes up for all the wasted 2nd round picks made in recent years.

I wouldn't call that a rumor as much as a likelihood since Martin has been running with the 1st team for quite some time. The author should have realized that the top OL prospect, by a long shot, was David DeCastro. I still can't believe that he fell to #24. Leave it to the Steelers, what a great pick. The Bears choked on that one big time, they should have ran to the podium with DeCastro's name on a card and drafted a pass rusher in the 2nd rd instead of drafting Alshon Jeffrey, especially since they traded for a similar and much better player beforehand in Brandon Marshall. McClellan is a good player, but the Fins drafted Olivier Vernon in the 3rd round, 'nuff said.
Yeah, the Steelers always seem to draft well. DeCastro will turn out to be one of the better players from this draft. That said, I also like Martin a lot and could see him emerging down the road as a pro bowl right tackle.

Definitely agree, especially if Jake Long can rebound which I think he will. I hope the Dolphins can find physical guards who can move to fill out the line over the next couple of years.
