I really want Directv service so I can get the NFL package, but getting service seems like a headache. Is it true your unit has to be hooked up to a phone line or not?, I've been told many things - good and bad about directv, and I don't know anyone personally that has it and the salesman is going to tell you nothing but good things. Just looking for any information, advice, etc. to help me make a decision. I usually go to the bars, but It would be nice to watch in comfort of my own home. I live in Virginia and all we get is Redskins and Ravens games locally, only so much I can take of that. Also, should I cancel my cable before or after I order Directv service. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks

I had it for 3 years and only had it plugged in for about the first week I had it. I haven't had it since January so I don't know if they have changed anything.

I just had my Directv installed a couple weeks ago and I love it. Yeah they do hook it up to a phone line for updates, caller id, etc...... I only had it hooked up to one tv in my house and have local cable on the others so no you wouldn't need to cancel your cable first. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

I'll second that. A lot of people get local cable on another TV, which might make sense, because I don't know how reliable DTV is in lousy weather. It went out during a thunderstorm the other night.

supposed to be hooked up to a phone line. Will it work without it being hooked up??? I think so. Just you won't be able to order movies and PPV's with your remote and stuff.

DirecTV doesn't let you get just the NFL Sunday Ticket anymore, do they? I thought they made you sign up for 12 months of the basic service at minimum.

exactly!! I have it and love it!! The only time you need to have anything hooked up to a phone line is if you get the Tiivo unit, it needs to be hooked up for setup ONLY. If you order PPV or ST, do it all online..this will also ensure that it is mirrored to all your receivers! Get Direct if you want to watch the Phins every weekend...you have to seeing that we have not a one National game this year.

Who the hell has a phone line behind their TV?

most "normal" houses have family rooms with multiple phone lines somewhere in the room. Just run the telephone line

Just signed up this week, getting it installed Saturday. My friend down the street has had it for years and I used to go down there to watch the games but his stupid fat wife always made sure she had something for him to do on Sunday afternoons, so we usually had to TiVO the beginning of the games and try to catch up to live action by the end of halftime. I figured that it's not right that we both get p-whipped by the same broad, especially since I'm not getting any from her anyway, so I decided to hook it up at my place. It actually ended up being less than what I'm paying for cable plus I get all of the games , a free DVR, plus I don't have to listen to my friends wife b!tch about us watching football all day at her house. Not sure about the telephone line, I think I recall them mentioning something about it though. Give 'em a call, you'll be glad you did.

I've had it since 97 mostly out of necessity due to living in the mountains in Montana and Colorado and no access to cable. For the most part I've been pleased and love the Sunday ticket and being able to see every Dolphin game and any other game I want to see from home. One complaint is that they are getting close to pricing me out of the Sunday ticket. When I first got it, it was like $129 and now we are pushing close to $200 even with the previous subscriber discount.

I didn't catch where you were from but I have to also locate the dish in an accessible area as our spring time heavy wet snows will interrupt service and I have to brush the dish off. One other complaint recently was we wanted to add Tivo and somehow they got it in their head to cancel some of our channels and when we called to get it fixed they then began charging us a higher rate than we were previously paying. Seemed like they had hired some 4th grade customer service agents who couldn't add and substract. That was pretty frustrating. Otherwise we've been pretty happy with it.

a lesson i just learned:

since directv is contract based they want to keep your business.

for example, i just got an directv high definition DVR receiver for 299 + 100 mail in rebate.

that piece of hardware retails for 700 bucks for normal customers.

if you want in on this deal call directv and make your way to the "Customer Retention" department.

tell them you are unhappy, digital cable offers their dvr's for so much cheaper, you lose signal in storms....whatever you want.

you will walk away with free hbo, showtime, and cinemax for 6 months and 500 bucks off a badass DVR HD rcvr just for telling the truth....

dont be a normal customer, make them hook you up!!! they will do it!!!

only when you set it up do you need to have a phone line attached for the company to get your service on, then you have to have it for rental movies that is all, reception is great and it is cheaper then cable and you get the phins

Right, you have to have service to get the ticket.
