1. MIAMI DOLPHINS - JAKE LONG, OT, MICHIGAN
This was one of the first places to have Chris Long going in the top spot and now it is probably one of the first to have Jake Long here as well. There is no question that the Dolphins would like to trade down but there may not be much of a market for #1 this year so if they get stuck and have to make the pick it will most likely be a Long, either Jake or Chris. Both are considered to be very safe choices here but I gave the ever so slight edge to Jake because offensive tackle is just a bigger need for Miami. The bottom line is that they already have some pass rushing outside linebackers but at this point Vernon Carey is the only starting-caliber offensive tackle on their roster.

32. MIAMI DOLPHINS - CURTIS LOFTON, ILB, OKLAHOMA
Zach Thomas was sent packing so the Dolphins will need a thumper like this inside in their 3-4.

57. MIAMI DOLPHINS - CHARLES GODFREY, CB, IOWA
Former safety who is the type of physical cornerback that Bill Parcells is sure to be looking for.

Lofton seems small for a parcells ILB. I'd rather have another stud OL, a DB, or maybe Henne.

Thanks for that update and I'm personally a fan of the first selection. I don't know much about the Linebacker chosen at 2a, but see a lot of familiar names chosen after him - especially o lineman.

I'd have no issues going oline with our first and our 2a pick. If this class is so deep in o-line - let's once and for all address that need.

Who knows, maybe something will happen between now and the draft that will provide us more picks in the 2nd....

Yeah, Scott updated it today. I think he's reaching a bit far with the "OMG we said Chris Long #1 now Jake Long trendsetting wooooo" statement. Jake Long is now becoming a sexy pick for the Dolphins, much in the same way that a QB becomes a sexy pick - because it's a part of the big success equation.

The most widely spread and accepted school of thought states that you find a franchise QB and get him a great line to protect him and you'll win games. That's partially true - you also have to be able to run the ball to eat clock, and you absolutely have to have a great defense if you want to go all the way. Since it's so difficult to find a franchise QB and a Pro-Bowl OT to protect him though, those positions will have the greatest priority.

What Scott did, however, was come up with a team needs spreadsheet and fit in all the pieces as best he could. That's cool, but I'm not sold that the draft works out the way he thinks it does.

I like the idea of taking Jake Long followed by another lineman with our first pick, too, if that lineman is Branden Albert.

However, a CB at 32 is probably the wiser use of the pick.

That mock sounds great, as long as Manningham or Albert don't drop to 32.

I dunno, given his predictions I just can't see the Dolphins passing up both Dan Connor for ILB (better than Loften and has the size Parcells wants), Antoine Cason (elite CB) and Brian Brohm (IMHO the best QB in this draft) with the first pick in the 2nd round. With our second 2nd rounder I'd rather have Tracy Porter of Indiana than Charles Godfrey.

All in all not a bad mock, but if the draft unfolds like that I think the Dolphins will have the opportunity to have a fantastic draft. Plenty of TE's and OL's to choose from with our 3rd and 4th picks and if we go with Connor and Porter with our 2nd rounders that would give us tremendous value and at the same time address most of our major needs: 2 OL, 1 TE, 1 ILB, and 1 CB all in rounds 1-4, and it looks like all would compete for starting jobs and likely win.

We can debate ad nauseum whether Jake Long would be the best top pick, but there's no doubt he's an improvement as a pass blocker over Vernon Carey and we'd have 2 dominant run-blocking Tackles. Grabbing a G like Mike McGlynn or Kirk Barton in round 3 or 4 and they could probably start. Dan Connor would definitely start at ILB and would be a steal at the top of the 2nd round--as was his teammate Paul Pozlusny early 2nd last year--and Connor is bigger, faster and generally considered the better prospect. I'm fairly certain that we can get a starting CB in the draft, and while Tracy Porter is the guy I like at the 2b pick, whomever is available there's going to be a lot of quality to choose from there. There are a lot of middle-round TE's out there like John Carlson, Brad Cottam, Martellus Bennet, and the one the Dolphins seem to like, Jermichael Finley the do-everything Texas stud. Guys like Fred Davis, Martin Rucker, etc. will be gone by then, but I suspect one of the mid-round guys will be there at the top of round 4, and we'll have our choice of them at the top of round 3.

I'd prefer someone other than Godfrey, but would not complain if it went down like that. Those are 3 solid picks.

Godfrey was a playmaker at Iowa. Whenever we were down, it seemed like he always made a play to help us come back... but our offense always failed us with a sophomore QB at the helm.

How does Lofton seem small for a Parcells ILB. He's 240 lb and 6' compared to Parcell's ILBs in Dallas he's very similar. Ayodele and James are both around 240 and stand at 6'1" to 6'2" which you know they jack up their height by an inch or two.

Yeah.. I'm not quite sure what his reasoning is on Lofton going before both Conner and Mayo.

Totally agreed.

You are rapidly becoming one of my favorite posters. Conner and Cason should go ahead of Lofton.
