Scouting Report

After using the #1 overall pick on Jake Long to shore up the offense last year the Dolphins and Bill Parcells can now turn their attention to the defense with their top pick in 2009. A shutdown corner is probably a more pressing need for Miami so Vontae Davis and Malcolm Jenkins would get consideration here as well but they also have some question marks at linebacker and Rey Maualuga would be a perfect fit for their 3-4 scheme. No matter where he has been Parcells has used early picks on impact linebackers and that trend continues with this choice. A big inside ‘backer who possesses the type of physical presence and nasty demeanor that the Tuna loves (....................... )

in his last two versions, scott wright has predicted Rey Maualuga to the fins... interesting but nothing much ... i agree with the fact that maualuaga > M.Jenkins or V.Davis in terms of upside and playmaker potential... CB is a bigger need but maualuaga has better talent and it's not even close

on a sidenote, pretty weird to put laurinaitis at #2 to the chiefs... i don't see that happening anytime soon

Yeah, to be completely honest, I think he is contradicting himself ridiculously. He has Maualuga number 1 overall on his board but still has Laurinaitis over him in his mock draft. KC's defense has been HORRID against the run and Maualuga is the SUPERIOR talent has far as run stopping and he puts Laurinaitis there instead. It's just baffling to me. I agree though, if he is there, it would be almost impossible to pass on him for us. Vontae or a Pass Rushing OLB would be much bigger needs for us and will get long looks from our FO, but Maualuga is the standard of talent in this draft and would add a nastiness to this defense that we have not seen in a LONG time. I'd be all for it!

If Mualuga, Jenkins, Davis, Crabtree, and Maclin are all on the board at our pick, i'll pass out over the excitement.

you or me dude. loll Im not a fan of jenkins yet to be honest. he is like Laurintis, over hyped, disapears in big games etc.

I love Rey Rey and Rey fits the EXACTTTTTTTTTt mold of Jake Long. TOUGH, STRONG, mASSIVE MEAN STREAK, and PHYSICALLY GIFTED. him in miami can mean good things. His game instincts are amaznig by the way. He reminds me of Pat WIllis but Bigger and I doubt as fast with a 4.39 40 he ran lmaoo

i wouldn't mind Maualuga myself either...he has a reputation for being a mean player in practice and in games...i know secondary and a consistent pass rusher will be needs to try and fill during the next offseason&draft, but if Rey's available when we pick,i'd be hard pressed to pass over him if i was picking...

imagine him on the blitz instead of crowder who has done nothign when he blitzes. plus Rey is ALWWWWAYS where the ball is. I rem vs Ohio St he went behidn the line to make hte play missed the guy, the RB ran for 4 yards and the ugy taht made the tackle was Rey. I couldnt figure out how he did that. he was literally back in the play within a split second.

THey even told him to lower his intensity and aggresiveness. He lvoes to lay the lumber. Imagine that...him with porter...they might send em both to jail lolll

I have been of the opinion this year with my family and friends that the Dolphins definitely need a Linebacker with the first pick. I know the Secondary needs a lot of work, but Im more weary of top 10 CBs than I am of top 10 LBs. The Fins need to get one of these LBs: Rey Mal, Brian Cushing, or Lauranitis. All would be very good in a 3-4 system. I think Cushing would be the versatily OLB that we need on the outside opposite Porter and eventually replace him. But you cant deny Rey presence. He hits with a viciousness and he knows where to be. Hes pretty decent in coverage too. I love Lauranitis's overall game.

Id say if there is a premiere CB or WR left in the bottom 20 (not likely) than the Fins should package something together and move up. A premiere CB/WR, and a premiere LB would help get this team younger, better, faster.

i think miami might try to trade bcak for more picks but i do expect a Lb in round 1 far more then a CB.

LB is a given adn this team lacks it BIG time. CB we will address in FA and 2A or 2B.

btw i dont like lauranitis...ovrerated big time. dispears in games, cant shed blocks, and gets lost. Rey is my man.

I dont think he'll be on the board. I think we are just good enough to win a few more games which will have us drafting in the middle of the pack. Probably at 10, I hope its 13-15 though. We could package that JT 2nd and move into top 5 if.......

CRABTREE was still on the board.
REY was the man in question.

Laurinitis may be this year's DAN CONNOR. And fall into late 1st early 2nd.

a 2nd wont get us into a top 5. and we wotn do it anwyas. we need all the picks.

plus, miami will go for curry or orakpo 100%.

another mock draft stats...

...Miami has bigger needs than inside linebacker, but Maualuga brings the kind of intensity and toughness that this defense lacks. Maualuga is fantastic against the run, and continues to improve weekly in coverage.

I agree 100%. look waht Jake long brought with his toughness, now its time to co unter that for the defense.

I wouldn't mind seeing Rey Maualuga in Miami but if not, there's a TON of talent that falls between the 5 - 15 range. There's a number of guys that we could draft. Rey Maualuga, Vontae Davis, Malcolm Jenkins, Micheal Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, or maybe even Eugene Monroe falls in our lap. I think Eugene Monroe is a longshot pick since we took Jake Long last season but the key to great offense is a great offensive line.

Do not sleep on Micheal Johnson. If he falls, that's our guy. I live two hours from the Georgia Tech campus. This is ACC country and I get to see and hear a lot about Micheal Johnson, Aaron Curry (Wake Forest), and Alphonso Smith (Wake Forest).

What I'm extremely curious about is the second round and how that plays out because that's where we make our splash. I'm really sad looking thru this mock first round and seeing that Brian Orakpo of Texas has moved into the first round. ESPN did a segment on his workout regimen and he might be the most impressive physical specimen I've ever seen. This kid bench presses 500+ pounds. He's incredibly strong and it translates well to the field. Some guys are strong but can't use it between the sidelines. I was really hoping he would fall to the second round but it doesn't look like it. I'm stern like Mr. Parcells myself when it comes to draft picks but this is one time I would like to trade up for a player.
